74 Vega had 5 mph aluminum bumpers.. my current plan is 4" hole saw and swiss cheese the bumpers. I don't plan on using it as a battering ram!

New chrome will be pretty.. oooh... shiney!

I actually don't think I'd like the bumpers tucked up on this car. And with as much street time as it gets it I rather have to cushion. I'll pop one of the shock absorbers off to see how much one weighs.

Plus I just got a set of fiberglass filler panels.

I'm going to have to look next time I'm at a yard. The nagging little voice in my head says one of those cars Nova/Omega/Skylark had aluminum bumpers... I know the larger cars did (like the monte carlos), but I remember scrapping bumpers that came off one of those cars - and I'm pretty certain it was aluminum (might be the Nova)

I promise you the 74 up Vegas had them - I sorta parked mine on top of a Grand Prix on Halloween 1981 and the bumper stayed pretty much straight. The rest of the car moved back about 2 feet, but the bumper was still usable. I pulled every bolt out of that car and it got turned into a dirt track car. The bumpers were aluminum. Definitely aluminum. Uh oh. 6:30.. time for Wopner. Aluminum.

I think the 74, 75, 76, and 77 Camaro had them too. The Nova I just looked at looked steel though.

Not sure on the X-bodies, but early Fairmonts had aluminum bumpers, and certain G-bodies had them too. A lot of the diesel G-body stuff had interesting stuff like aluminum hoods and core supports as well.

ummmm-dude you have waaaaay too much time on your hands-why'd you clean em? you do know they are gonna strip em with nasty chemicals anyhow......

The website says to clean them to save labor costs. I'm sure that is more for ones buried in dirt or a ton of grimy oil or something, but no big deal. Took me about ten to fifteen minutes to run a green scotch brite pad over them and get all the bug guts off the front one and to get some of the oil grim residue off the rear (namely the bottom).

You can see on the front bumper the vertical shinier spots are from the front bumper guards.

Once you get the bumpers done and the car repainted, it will be a safe bet that you will have the nicest 1977 skylark w/ 455 efi and tko in the world. Keep up the good work!

Taking a new direction on the Cruise Control. Just bought a VR sensor filter/converter for the MegaSquirt board that should allow me to port in the vehicle speed sensor directly to the MegaSquirt and not need the GM VSS buffer that I have currently wired in. I think the VSS buffer board I have isn't working. Once the VSS sensor is ported into the MegaSquirt I'll have the Speedo on the MSIII working and I should be able to use the tach out function to send a signal to the Cruise Control Module in place of the GM VSS buffer. You guys will know how it turns out when I get to it =P

It's only providing the signal to a factory GM cruise control module. Now that I think about it, I think the MSIII has a VSS pulse output too. I'll look into it later.
