Changing the plugs with the long tube Mac's is a Cake walk. I have not changed the plugs yet with the shorties. I was saying the pain the the butt is when you have to pull the motor w/ long tubes. (I have had this motor out way to many times.) Replaceing the starter is ruff as well.

All that being said I have no clue what the raised deck height of the 351 will do for header clearance

Next time you're over let's take a look at the 'Stang. Those headers are WAY higher and everything is a tight fit. I think the long tubes actually would have been better. Next time.......

Dan, I just bought 351 height 1 3/4 BBK long tubes and a shorty h-pipe for Monica's horse with no name. I'll get back with you on how they fit. The automatic may be the sticking point.

Russell - I hear ya - and I am still pretty sure I'd rather unbolt long tubes than deal with the equal lengths, but I'll be putting them back in the 90lx beause.. I have them, and it's supposed to be a daily. Long tubes and off-road h-pipes get more attention than I want. Regular shorties like the stock stuff were a breeze.

For an ultra-tight budget, the Fox shorties might be okay as a starting point. I wonder if they hit anything on a 65 era Mustang/Cougar?

Beags - I hope the BBK's you have are a common flange design - I got a used set of BBK with the flanges for each port seperate from the rest -nightmare - no way they would seal right, ever, tubes heat up and bend and "relocate" the port flange... PITA doesn't begin to describe. From that point forward - no headers for me that don't have a single flange per head that's 3/8" thick.

The P heads make sense if you get an engine with them and they are in good shape, if I was shopping for heads alone - I'd get GT40s, or aluminum if $$ allowed. If you're buying used heads, inspect them very carefully, if the buyer is not willing to let you compress a few springs, pop the locks out and look at the valve seats... walk away - it can cost what the used heads cost at the machine shop to fix them up right - been there, paid that.... more than once. My first set of twisted wedges cost me $600, then cost me $750 for all new valves, guides, and valve job. The edelbrocks on the Falcon engine cost me $600 - and needed the valve tips ground flat again, new seals, and a valve job, $250, plus retainers and locks and springs to match my cam. New heads start making sense real quick unless the buy in is way low.
There's always something new to learn.

Unless they come on a car or in a package deal on parts I will never own spaghetti shorties.

Factory 85 to 93 definitely won't fit, maybe some aftermarket. I did see on the Mustang board I hang out on, a guy had factory 94 headers on his 68. They barely fit though. One tube was just about on the steering box.

I've been looking into headers for this combo on the Summit site and have found these two . Both are what they call medium length & a 1 5/8 primary tube . JBA , 14g stainless steel ,3/8 flange , $ 615 ouch! and Hedman , 18g steel , ceramic coated , 1/4 flange , $470 . So for $145 more you get a much better header but no ceramic coating . The same JBA piece but with a ceramic coating is $780 ! . Does it really cost $310 to have a set coated ? .
