So, Beags... time is short. What's the plan?

I got the title signed, so hopefully it gets registered Tuesday. Iif the ALL the parts show up in time, stroked 351, if just the brackets get here, a 351, if not, nitrous the crap out of the 302.
Gave the mu(lle)tt to Monica today. She spent the afternoon spraying rust spots with conversion primer, primer, and refrigerator paint. I dorked with the aod bracketry and got it to shift (tv cable issue).
I'm tempted to rebuild the AOD from the LSC for it if I can find another short tailshaft. I'm also not sure what is in this "rebuilt" 302 because it's got a Ford aluminum intake, the finned "Power by Ford" valve covers. I think it may be an 85 motor?
I had really hoped to have it in the garage but got interrupted by rain and work.Last edited by Beagle; August 26, 2012, 08:56 PM.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.Comment

Roger that!
I have been tightening up junk and checking everywhere I think the p.o. had a wrench on it, I screwed around way too long to make it respectably fast and need to worry about it not needing AAA to get home. As BBR has been persistent to remind me of staying focused, this seemed to make the most sense. If I get some parts here in time, I may get to make it move a little better. Still 10 days...
spray paint 6.00
Tires - 150.00
throw in a mutt car 1100.00
Trunk lock 11.00
Hood bolts / washers 3.00 (metric? I don't know why they took it off.)

Car doesn't have a cat back on it right now, it's MIA after the cats. I'll borrow the dumped turbos from the LSC, worth maybe 40.00... rusty dumped 2 1/4" no name turbo mufflers. I'll spring for long tubes and an offroad h-pipe for the 351 and have a 2.5 built for Hooker AeroChambers, but they may not get here in time so here's the running total. I'll change the total if I pull this crap back off of it.
1307.00
I'm rounding junk up, not keeping track of change. Also really wanted to do LX but I don't think I can swing the time frame. I'm hoping the cage shows up for this one in time but if not, I'm not gonna sweat it. It won't be fast enough to need one right now.
I may also ask for a few days at the end of this week / beginning of next week as I'm really going to be worthless if I don't have this done anyway. I have 5 or 6 weeks available... have to burn some before the end of the year.Last edited by Beagle; August 26, 2012, 09:26 PM.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.Comment

Kickass. Just got shipping confirmation from Jeg's, should have pan / accessory crap to put a serpentine drive on the 351, keep a/c and P/s. Should be here Wednesday.
If the 351 headers don't show, maybe I can use the bundle o snakes shorties. Worst case, I think I have some truck shorties that might work.
I need to check my bank account. cough.
The KB pistons for the 387 haven't shipped yet, and I need them to balance it. I'll go with the 351, AFR185's, XE274 cam. Should be anywhere between 9.24 and 9.75:1. I can redo it later. I think it will have enough vacuum for power brakes. I don't really want to deck it because I intend to pull it down again for the 3.85 crank and would rather deck for that combination.
Focused... hope it doesn't bust the AOD.
budget wise, if we don't count the tires, it will come in almost exactly 5k. The 460 would have been a few hundred cheaper. The 1300.00 worth of heads for this deal make the 351 more. It will be down about 100 on torque and up about 75 on HP.
Question - if it won't fit and I have to hack the hood anyway, does anybody have a Victor Jr. for a 351 they want to rent? lol.Last edited by Beagle; August 27, 2012, 05:16 AM.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.Comment

E7 heads should be a dead give-away whether or not it is an 87 motor.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Good call. I'll check when it's on the moving cart.Originally posted by BBR View PostE7 heads should be a dead give-away whether or not it is an 87 motor.
Rebuilt could mean anything, never know what they put in it. I'll splurge for a set of head gaskets maybe... definitely later.

"rebuild in a can" motor honey and some spray paint.
Yea - best to start fresh. I'm glad I'm not the only one that is going to take the first trip down the 1/4 ever with the car - in Tulsa. There's always something new to learn.Comment

the 351 won't be rebuilt, I'm taking a 100k Lightning shortblock (F4te), slapping some decent street level heads and just a tiny bit more cam than than springs are supposed to hold (.555/.565 on a ".550" roller cam spring package), changing the oil pan and pickup, putting the serpentine accessory kit on it, a dual plane and a I have no clue about carburetors vacuum secondary 750, and beating on it. I laugh in the face of blowby!
meh. I might stick file fit rings in it and check the bearings. The bores look good. I'm tempted to leave it alone and running it as is for the hell of it, just to see what an under 2000.00 engine will do. My only hope is that with a low rise dual plane (Hurricane, Pro Products) it will fit under the flat hood.

255-60x15's are a pretty good fit, MT ET Street Radials, good call 1BadMonkey. It's about all I thought I would like to see on that rim. I couldn't get used to the 275 on a 7" rim.
You might be able to see it, there's some crap on the tread. The junk on them is grass! Sticky? Fronts are 195 65's. The front end is a mile high, I'll worry about it later.
The camber is jacked beyond belief and it's pretty toed in. I think they put new tie rod ends on it and never got it aligned. I'll take it to the shop and get it aligned before I drive it any. The camber has the front wheels looking a lot more goofy than they really are.
All the black crap on the body is conversion primer, it has (had/still has) some surface rust on the paint. Pretty, it won't be. I told Monica it was a 400 footer, she gets it. lol.Last edited by Beagle; August 27, 2012, 03:58 PM.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.Comment

I like the new tires! I would leave the rings and bearings, I would consider replacing the oil pump and timing chain.

According to the last owner, the 351 had good oil pressure. He said it had been run on synthetic all it's life. The pan and block are really clean, it appears to have been very well maintained. I'll check the bearings anwyay, since I plan to beat on it. I'll put a new Cloyes roller chain on it for sure, I bought one off of Ebay for 20.00 several years ago from a shop closing down. Sometimes pack ratting is good.
My only real worry with it is the Hypereutectic pistons they put in them. I'm kinda wanting to put a 75hp Nitrous kit on it. I think I will order a Davis Unified HEI for it, and use the Chiang Kai-shek as a paper weight in the trunk.
The "smart" part of me is still screaming to go get the LX for Drag Week since I know sooooo much more about that car and I want a stick. BBR's words keep echoing in my posts (ears) though, so I'm staying focused here. I'm going to try to get it to the alignment shop today.
I am really on the fence about a trailer at this point. Being a hatchback, I can put all kinds of crap in the car, but should something happen and it winds up with a C4 instead of an AOD, I wouldn't mind another inch or two of rubber underneath it to bring it down under 3500 on the road. A trailer would be easier to detach, but then I'd be tempted to haul more crap I don't need too.Last edited by Beagle; August 28, 2012, 04:27 AM.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.Comment

focus grasshopper! I would at least pull the rod and main caps and look, maybe plastigauge.
take the cover off the oil pump and make sure it looks good inside, put in a good oil pump drive shaft, and put it together.
Lots of hyper piston short blocks live a long time - I would not risk NOS on DW with as many uknowns as you and I are dealing with - making it through the week NA will be epic enough for both of us don't you think? There's always something new to learn.Comment
