    Thanks. James.
James, I shot you an email. Cool car, very clean looking. 32 years is a long time.

Got the motor our yesterday, I know it's been said many time but these things take up a bunch of space once when they are in pieces. It came apart nicely, aside from a few small parts it really is a nice to work on.

Now to clean, and clean some more. Final bits arrive Monday to get the 401 together. Hope to drop it in the engine compartment next weekend. The only thing I'm worried about is dealing with the long-tube headers and how it fits around the starter, Z-bar, and ??.

Well got a ton of cleaning done today, moving miscellaneous bits from one motor to the other. A bit of organizing and planning, all is looking good.
One thing that drives me crazy is not finding little parts, when I put the T5 in, I purchased 3 pilot bushings right away because I knew I'd need them. I used one, then saved the others for when the 401 went in... Well.... Hell if I can find them today!

ah yes, the "I'll buy it so I don't have to drive an hour round trip to the auto parts store"..... I've found that it does work out that way - just not on the car I planned to save time with (I find the part decades later, and use it).

        June 1, huh?

As for headers - don't leave them bare steel, VHT or duplicolor make really, really, really good header paints. So good that your coater will curse you and them when he goes to "just blast it off" heheh

the ironic part (for the coater) in my case was the guy who did the coating was so adamant about how hard it was to get the coating off - that I stopped using him and started simply painting... after all, the whole point of coating is to put something on there that won't just blow off, and 2 cans of paint is 1/10th the cost of a ceramic coating.

It does not take long for bare headers to rust, If you don't want rust I would put something on them before they go in the car.

Hi Mike. With regard to the headers, they will be a lot easier to install while you are putting the motor back in. If they are the big tube Hookers, you are going to have fun getting everything in there. The headers will require some clearancing where they meet the spring towers- esp the passenger side, and you pretty much have to get a mini starter. Regular street type are easier. The worst part is juggling the starter into position while holding the header out of the way. On the drivers side, the z-bar is not a problem, but the pivot that holds it to the strut-rod bracket is another story!! The d-shaped stud and nut are real buggers to install as is the pivot on the block side. One more thing, leave the sparkplugs out while putting the headers in place- they just get in the way. Take your time as you lower the engine in place and it should be a piece of cake!!

I have the Doug's D103's, and from what I'v read they fit better than the big tube Hookers, time will tell. I did need to cut and re-fab part of the pass.-side motor mount bracket as that was residing in a space a tube needed be.
I am prepared to buy a mini-starter... but hope I do not need to.

I already have the RobbMc fuel pump, looks like a nice piece, so what's a few hundred more for a starter too!? Ugghh
I have fought with the z-bar twice now, yes that bolt and Stud on the frame side is not my friend.

Now where are those dam polot bushings!

Hood is at the body shop for some 'real' paint, not flat-black primer.
I have given them the C-stripe sticker to match that black. Hope to have the C-Stripe on it soon too, as I've been intending to do that for a few years now.

                        Agreed, WIN.

I'm convinced that I've got a black hole gobbling up the extra parts that I put in "a special place so I don't forget where they are."

I did sleep better last night.

Parts arrived today so I can get the heads torqued down, and move forwared with everything that connects to them. I even purchased a new Torqe wrench for the occasion! I had always just borrowed a larger one, I previously only had one that went to 70 ft lbs, or something like that, for motorcycle work.

So now when someone asks if my head is screwed on tight, I can say Yes!;)

Well, getting the intake ready to go on took longer than anticipated, shocking I know! It’s ready to go on now,
I found a nice surprise on the Edelbrock intake and head port match-up. I went to port-match them, and to my surprise all is good! What I did need to port match was the gasket! The holes were too small!
What’s interesting about that is the heads are new, and the intake is likely some 15 or more years old.
Flow testing by others has verified that AMC Edelbrock heads flow as good as most ported Iron heads, and have a better combustion chamber to boot.
Motor should be ready to drop in this weekend!
I do need to find all the pipe-widgets to connect the water temp sensor, fuel line fittings, and the oil pressure. That could take hours of driving around, then likely an order I’ll need to wait a few days for.
