John, I am sure you did it the right way and degreeded the cam... How far have you seen one come in out of specs? You advanced yours 4* I was thinking about retarding my E cam 4* in my 79 capri to try to get some more top end. I don't have the tools to degree a cam so I was going to stick it in there and say a little prayer. I am sure my stock compression ratio is less than optimal. I am guessing you still have the X cam? So our motors are completely diffrent other than being sbf. I am assuming you care about low end because yours is a street / strip car? I don't care about low end b/c I think I can get it rolling push is clutch floor it rev it to the moon dump clutch and spin (open rear street tires) through the low end.

whats your opinion on me retarding my E cam in my P motor for my LSR car

6.300 one piece pushrods ordered - another $109 - is someone keeping track? LOL

Russel - since my car is pretty light and if anything over geared - I should have no problem getting out of the hole. I was hoping for 10.5 :1 compression - still being safe on pump gas with the aluminum heads.... given time restraints, etc, I'm not going to zero deck the block or mill the heads - so it will go together as is at about 9.7.
Yes - still have the X cam I got when building the ranger.

I don't think retarding the cam is going to do what you want it to do. Honestly - if I was going to go that far into the engine - I'd be more tempted to change the cam to something that will get you more top end, instead of messing around with a few degrees of cam timing for the price of gaskets and time.... I think it would be hard to tell a difference if the degreeing was the only change you made.

you opened a can of worms, if I were to change the cam which one should i get? I want it to pull hard to at least 6k if not 6.5k.... Changing the cam would be alittle more work than just changing the degree (have to pull the intake but I have been thinking about changing it). When I put it together the frist time, there were zero "while I here". It truely is a junk yard motor with just a cam, intake, carb, dizzy, and headers, EVERYTHING else stock explorer (well oil pan and timing cover). The stock timing chain had some slack it in. I should have replaced it when I put the cam in but I was trying to not spend any more money. I just got a summit box with a new double roller timing chain that has 3 keys -4 0 +4. so I need to pick one.

its hard to make a truck motor rev with out spending money on it....

Russell - what's the old saying? "speed costs money how fast can you afford to go?" ;-)

Got to love Summit! - I ordered pushrods last night about 10pm... they are on my front porch thanks to FedEx at 2:30pm, standard $9 shipping fee.

I ordered rotors from "iRotor" on ebay last monday (10 days ago).... they haven't yet shipped. I didn't even know they hadn't shippped until I emailed them on Tuesday. Why, again, didn't I spend less and go with Summit? d'oh!!!

I don't have a tracking number yet from the Iowa rod shop that sold me the column and ujoints and DD shaft....

Speaking of the column, it comes with a 9 bolt wheel adaptor.....

Originally I was thinking about keeping the stock falcon wheel (white one that came with the car is trashed but I got a nice black one at the columbus swap)....

              Then I started shopping.....

So - what do you think of this - with black column:
              http://www.ebay.com/itm/CPP-LEATHER-...c2a31b&vxp=mtr

              OR

              This - with white column:
              http://www.ebay.com/itm/170873414977...84.m1423.l2649

dash and tops of doors will be white regardless

I guess so far in this car I can afford to go 137.7 for pretty cheap. I "only" (for right now) want to go 139.9999 and set a few records. So I think I am pretty close, just need a little more (I guess 10-20 hp) I am just looking for 20 cheap HP is that to much to ask

XE274-hr is about as far as I'd go with stock compression (224* intake, 112* separation) but .555/.565, you'll probably have to get springs and the heads set up for it. PITA...money, time.

                        BEECAM!

No, Milner, I don't keep track of your money. Let's spend some more!

Probably won't need meth injection with a 3 inch stroke and most current aluminum heads, and getting over 10:1 with most aluminum heads out (60cc +/- 2) there on a 302 means popups. A zero decked 3cc valve relief setup is just at 10:1. Cut them down to 55cc heads, minimal cut on 86 real flat tops, 2.5cc maybe to get .100 valve clearance with the X303 cam, now you're just over 10.5:1 and that X cam may not have enough duration to keep it from pinging.

Go to a 331 or 347 and you can stay with flat tops and get 11:1 pretty easy. I've been wonering about that a lot recently... I had a moment of weakness and wound up with a 248*@.050 solid for 20.00, can't remember what the funnel web was but I wanted to build a 7k rpm 302 for grins and cheap. It'd be a fun deal to put in for DW and suck the rest of the year. I'd yank it back out after playing a little and put something back in that wouldn't stall when the A/C came on.

I've been looking for a car like yours and ran across an older pro streeted '65 for reasonable considering the amount of work done on it. It's not 5 grand cheap, but it's mostly done.

Beags, given the time line I'm going to live with the 9.7 static compression I think, advancing the x cam 4 degrees should help a little.

If I get serious about building more power, I have a cleveland and windsor I can play with, since the M2 is in and the shock towers are gone.... those are now easy peasy lemon squeezy swaps - just money and time!
