Ok my mustang won't start. It cranks and it has spark, but no luck. The fuel pump relay was clicking and i decided to replace it just to be sure, but that didnt fix it. When cranking the car, the relay keeps clicking on and off. any ideas?

Re: Mustang Won't Start
first - ck for fuel pressure
then spark
them timing
then compression
check the fuel pump connector with a test lamp
probably a puked fuel pump - that car is pretty old -
Re: Mustang Won't Start
Ok im thinking pump at this point. when you first turn the key, the pressure goes up to about 30psi then drops pretty fast down to 0.
The engine will run for a few seconds on starting fluid. I guess im dropping the tank tomorrow morning. From what ive heard, its pretty simple on these cars.Comment

Re: Mustang Won't Start
check that your pump has power after you let off the key from "start" to run..
you might be getting power under the start part of the ign switch but not the run.. and that give you fuel pressure then none..
check for power at pump when key is in the run spot.. before you drop the tank
pumps are dead.. don't build pressure then just die... it sounds like the pump is getting no power in the run key spot..
confirm first then drop the tank..
I think you'll be hunting a wire/power issue not a pumpComment

Re: Mustang Won't Start
Have you checked the TFI module? they can be bad - and still spark. They spark at 10* by default, but they can still have a fried transistor and not send an RPM signal to the computer, which would cause the same behavior you're seeing with the fuel pump.www.realtuners.com - catch the RealTuners Radio Podcast on Youtube, Facebook, iTunes, and anywhere else podcasts are distributed!Comment

Re: Mustang Won't Start
Anyone know where to get new lines from the top of the tank to the steel hard lines? I need to replace both, they're about 2 feet long each. No parts store carries them. Not even the dealer. Any ideas?Comment

Re: Mustang Won't Start
go to napa they can get fuel lines with the right ends on them then you bend them to fit.

Are they plastic lines? If they are, there are kits that you can get to fab your own. I know Car Quest sells replacement parts for the kit.Comment

Re: Mustang Won't Start
Might be able to call one of the big mustang junk yards and have them send you a used one, or this place has new ones.

Re: Mustang Won't Start
I thought 85's still had carbs? Or was it the first year they were injected? Saw somebody say something about a swap though. Does it have a return line? If it builds pressure then falls to 0 psi, could it be a bad regulator, that bypasses all of the fuel? I may be completely off, curious as to what fixes it. Did you have to beat on the tank to get the pump to run?Comment
