Most of the time, I go on the internet and find the closest hotel to each track and book it as soon as you can. They fill up fast, would rather have a room then sleep in the car! Even doing it this way, I have been either in the host t=hotel ore very near it.
I just booked at the Comfort Inn in Racine, and Holiday Inn Express in Clinton (by Cordova). I'll book Indy tomorrow (not too worried about getting a room there). I've never raced at Gateway, so I'm looking for any advice on motels in that area (don't really want to stay downtown St. Louis at $200/night).

P.S. I DON'T drive an automatic (damn BS forum)!
I booked the Drury Inn, in Collinsville then Hampton Inn inBrownsburg..
I'll finish up today with a room in Racine and Holiday Inn Express in

I'll recommend the Clarion on Waterfront Parkway for Indy. We stayed there when we were following in 2013. Had reservations at the Ramada Limited and it was a dump. Went to the Clarion about 8:00 hoping to find a room. After explaining our situation (on my wife's birthday, no less) the nice young guy at the desk gave us a suite for a regular room price and the manager gave us a couple drinks at the bar. It was a pretty nice place and close to the track. Lots of drag week cars there too!

I went with the Holiday Inn Express in Clinton IA.... one thing I didnt
like about this place is "its non refundable"
EDIT
You can get it refundable IF you pay a minor fee... make
sure you ask about this... the first guy that I booked with
never said anything about it.... so ASK

That almost got me too, the ~$90 option was non-refundable, but the ~$100 option was refundable (maybe I booked that last one?). Since it will be a lottery to even register for Drag Week, I figured the extra $10 to have a refundable room was well worth it if I can't get registered... or my engine starts making iron filings again right before the start (like last year).
Billy, thanks for the tip on Collinsville. I found (and booked) a Days Inn downtown St. Louis last night for ~$100 and thought I was doing well, but I just rebooked in Collinsville at a much better rate.
Here's my week:
Gateway (Collinsville): Super 8
Indy: La Quinta Airport (stayed there for PRI in 2013 and it was really nice)
Great Lakes (Racine): Comfort Inn
Cordova (Clinton): Holiday Inn Express
Gateway (Collinsville): Super 8
Now to just get registered, and get the new engine done...
Gateway (Collinsville) Drury Inn ..which was the host in 2013
Indy (Brownsburg) Hampton Inn... which was the host in 2013(and I think
it is this year also)
Great Lakes (Racine) Super 8
Cordova (Clinton) Holiday Inn Express
Gateway (Collinsville) Drury Inn... the Drury took REAL good care
of DW guys in 2013 with a evening of drinks and appetizers.. we used
that as our dinner that night
Just asked at the Holiday Inn in Clinton and was told just a 24hr cancel policy. No $ if in time.
