  • Make your own penetrating oil - that's better than KROIL?

Just got this in an email - appears legit.... I'm going to have to try this atf / acetone mix!

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of
    > penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen
    > rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did

    > acetone and tranny fluid!

    > Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
    > None .................. 516 pounds .
    > WD-40 .............. 238 pounds ... $0.25
    > PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
    > Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
    > Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
    > ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

    > The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

John - Have you made any yet? I wonder how it is for loosening frozen pistons. The Nailhead is still seized.

I'd like to know the ft lb or inch lb.. the bolt/nut was torqued to in the first place..
if the test set up was torqued to 65 pounds and it takes 53 to get it out.. the atf/acetone is eating more than just the rust

Re: Make your own penetrating oil - that's better than KROIL?

I didn't read the whole article - just what you see here, but from the rest of the message it seemed that the fasteners were all supposed to be equal - and rusty before they were taken apart and the breakaway torque measured.

Dan - I just got this today - but I'll be making up a batch of acetone / atf.

ATF has some magic detergents for sure - this will be interesting to try.

We blasted the 428 apart with a sledge - I'm hoping the 292 will come apart a bit easier!

I refuse to believe the test. PB B'laster is the greatest rust sauce ever. Nothing is better, and nothing you say will change my mind.

Seriously, I'm a fanatic. Look at the label, it does everything.

you should try mopar graphite penetrating oil , it foams up
gm has rust penetrant and heat valve lubricant - good stuff

I'm just sharing some info - no proof of any of it yet.

But Chad - I'll put Kroil up against PB any day! maybe just cause I love the smell so much. ;D

I will pick up some acetone and mix up a batch, and pour it into the cylinders of the 292.... see if it makes any "penetration" between those pistons and cylinder walls.... if not - after the forum 454 is off that engine stand - we're going to lengthen it, T it and put the 292 on it for a good piston flailing party....

I say we do 2 pistons of Kroil....2 of the homemade......and 2 of PB blaster.....

See which is the best. I love science :

Whenever I hear guys anywhere south of Ohio talk about rust, I laaaaaaaaugh.

I've got 'bout a dozen test subjects for this experiment sitting around the barn out back. In Rustachusetts.

One of which is a boat trailer that gets dipped in the Atlantic once a week all summer long.

                    We shall see.

I use ATF to clean all kinds of machinery, takes the rust right off. A bit better than WD-40 and leaves an oil coating to prevent rust. MUCH better than WD-40 for cleaning the ways on a lathe, milling table, etc. So I'd believe it.

I'm thinking of brewing up a batch to try on the Nailhead. The only problem is that I've already used about everything else on it including Sea Foam so the data is tainted somewhat. Still worth a try.

On the engine stand - I dropped the big bux and bought a 4 point stand from Harbor Freight (we have one here in town). I think it was $50 or so. I bought it for the Buick as I think it's too heavy for my antique 3 point stand. Now if I can get the engine to rotate so I can get the trans off so I can mount the engine, etc, etc.
