      Re: Magnaflow vs. Flowmaster

you want the quieter of the 2....Magnaflow....

i have a magnaflow on my wifes truck and it has a nice deep throaty idle, and has a real nice sound at WOT

I run a 40 FM on my other truck and 2 40's on my Fury...the truck is obnoxious...the car on the otherhand sounds great witha full length exhaust and H pipe but does drone just a bit on the highway...nothing too bad tho....

The FM's tend to drone quite a bit whereas the magnaflows in my experience do not

      here is the car

        Re: Magnaflow vs. Flowmaster

Magna's are flow through design and are glorified glass packs. I'm pretty sure their website has videos showing how they sound.

        Flows are chambered.

Personally I do not like Flows. Besides nearly every other car out there has them including Escalades, I'm not into their droning.

Hanging around cars with similar builds and seeing how they sound, then pester the owners to what they are running.

The Escort has a 2.5 magnaflow. With a header, no cat, and the muffler, I can clearly hear music from my laptop's speakers at turning 3 grand on the highway. Bear in mind, I have a completely stripped interior. No carpet, no sound deadener, and holes in the floor.

            Re: Magnaflow vs. Flowmaster

I had a pair of Magnaflow's on my Riviera with the 425 Nailhead with only 6in of pipe after the mufflers and it was loud but not bad. Sounded real good with the 2.5in pipe and would snarl good when reved. Right now I have another Magnaflow on my Riviera with the Turbo6 but I've not started it to hear how it sounds.

I've never liked Flowmasters on anything but a truck and even then sometimes they are just annoying. Honestly the best sounding mufflers I've had have been Dynomax Super Turbos on my old 468cid BBB in my 70 Riviera but they are rather limited on thier selection so I've not been able to use them since.

              Re: Magnaflow vs. Flowmaster

Quiet and flowmaster should never be in the same sentence.

I absolutely hate flowmaster chambered drone - it literally gives me a headache in just a few minutes.

I'm a big fan of the classic "turbo" muffler - an S shaped flow through an oval case with some packing.

like the old Sonic turbos, magnaflow, warlock, etc.... chambered mufflers are a headache, period.

                Re: Magnaflow vs. Flowmaster

Three chambered FlowMasters with a 2 1/2 inch full exhaust are quiet.

Even the two chambered FlowMasters are pretty quiet with full exhaust.

Then it depends if your getting the old school FlowMasters or the new style Delta-Flow FlowMasters which are way quieter than the old school FlowMasters.

And as for any exhaust, if you don't run at least 18" of pipe out the back of the muffler your going to get that dreaded drone, and that goes for any muffler. Best thing to do is exit the exhaust out from under the vehicle, be it out the side or the back, but it will cut down on the sound.

Now two 3" pipes going into one single chambered Flowmaster and exiting the car with a 5" pipe is LOUD!!!!!, especially when it's an 11.5:1 402 BBC feeding it. ;)

I actually prefer the sound of Flowmasters over the Magnaflows.

                    Here you decide.

I love the sound of FlowMasters when you get on it. Just sounds like a beast wanting to rip you apart.

                        Re: Magnaflow vs. Flowmaster

I have to say that I love my Flowmaster exhaust.Yeah it goes all the way out the back. Sounds so sweet when on it ,can't hardly hear it with the windows down while on the high-way.With the windows up it resonate some but thats good for when it's cool out .......I cn still hear it.Will agree with Ironhead that muffs with packing are a little mellower but if it breaks down then it doesn't flow as well. (which is one reason I like chambered muffs) This is why you want stainless steel packing.(If your going the absorbsion route.

Edit was just adding the last sentance for finishing the thought better.

theres a reason flows have the nickname chokemasters

at least in the Grand Prix supercharge V6 world they have been shown to rob power over the stock muffler wile Magnaflows tend to gain 11hp on stock engines

I always hate to not be in the know. But I didn't realize that FM's where so widley hated. I have had 3 sets of FM's first I had a set of original 40's didn't like them at all they cackled real bad just cruising down the road, second set was a set of 50 series delta flows really liked the sound of these. They were fairly mundane in my opinion and really didn't come to life until about three quarter throttle or hard acceleration. I still have them and all in all I liked them. I currently have a set of super 44's on my car and I really like them alot they are not to loud and not to quiet. I guess I am an oblivious person because I never really noticed the drone you all are speaking of. Or maybe its the hearing loss my wife swears I have. But once I get finished with my bathroom remodel and I finish getting my car put together I will see if I notice the drone.
