    Not sure about 1/2 way down unless he is boring tapered! But it is very important to be sure the ring is square in the bore. They sell tools that help you square the ring up in the bore OR you can use the piston upside down to push the ring down. I typically only go a couple inches down but I don't believe the distance down in the bore is as critical as it being square to the bore.
