Talked to the machinist and he said to figure out what I need for gap according to the ring manual. Put them halfway down the hole and measure with a feeler gauge. File them until I get the right reading halfway down the bore and I’m good to go. Any nay sayers?

Not sure about 1/2 way down unless he is boring tapered! But it is very important to be sure the ring is square in the bore. They sell tools that help you square the ring up in the bore OR you can use the piston upside down to push the ring down. I typically only go a couple inches down but I don't believe the distance down in the bore is as critical as it being square to the bore.
