  • Just out of curiosity, what price did you put on the 552 back when it was for sale?

    Comment

    • I was asking $6500. I posted it on a few FB for sale groups and had some interest, but nobody local. Most were "if I were closer, I'd be all over that" type responses. Guess i'll just keep it.

I drove it today at lunch and totally forgot it had a leaky heater core. It let me know. All the way home and back......

          • Since RMRW is over, I can start thinking about the truck again!

The problem is, I am about as indecisive as one could possible be.....

I am still itching to turbo it, but that opens up a slew of options. Use the stock 460 as is?, use the 552 short block with the EFI top end? , use the entire 552 with a different cam and intake? use the Megasquirt?, try to use the stock EEC-IV? one turbo or two?

I have lots of ideas, but I just have not locked onto "the one" yet.

My goal is to have a decently fast truck that will still cruise around town without demanding any extra attention. No watching the water temp or oil pressure like a hawk, no putting it in neutral at a light, no worry about valve train noises. Needs to have a hyd flat tappet or hyd roller cam. Hyd rollers are expensive, so they may not be an option. I also want to retain the E4OD because overdrive is awesome.

The stock ECM is speed density, and from what I have been reading, they are woefully inadequate and difficult when coupled with forced induction. So, that leaves Megasquirt. That's all fine and dandy except that the EEC-IV controls the E4OD, so now I have to come up with a way to control it. I could piggyback the MS and buy software to tune the trans functions, but the software is basically the same cost as a standalone trans controller. I believe the software allows more trans tuning than the standalone, but the simplicity of the standalone is appealing.

            • When I was first getting ideas of injecting my Ford I looked into quarterhorse and twEECer but at the time they had really crappy interfaces and decided I didn't need to learn a whole 'nother set of programming rules if I wanted anything more than stock. You could probably do megasquirt for the engine and then microsquirt to control the transmission (or if you don't need all the bells and whistles, 2 microquirts), I'm pretty sure they've got the E40D tune down pat by now, they can talk to each other over the canbus too. I guess it's the age old problem of hotrodding, how much do you want to spend?

              • Any of those can be made to work. ET goal and budget. Figure those out then the easiest way to make it happen.

                  • i asked Scott (DG) about that years ago - the '95 Lightning has an E4OD. He indicated piggyback would work. They are saying now the Mega / Microsquirt deal can communicate over CANbus. That interests me because then you get transmission and engine management, but I can't say I know much of anything about it.

I don't think of you as one of the blow it up because you can guys, so I figure you would science it out until something bad happened. I'm still curious how much the stock pistons will tolerate.. the E7 stuff with low boost (maybe 7 psi). Maybe open the ring gap up a little first?

                    • Shop: I have a slab in my backyard, but have not built the shop. I have access to a sizable shop space now so the need/desire to build has waned somewhat. I would still like to have one at my house, but it is currently low on the priority totem pole.

After talking with the guys over at eectuning.org for a bit, the factory speed density ecm is a no-go for boost. The ecm is unable to read positive MAP pressure so you are stuck using an FMU or some other way to crutch the fuel. So, that kinda rules out the Tweecer and the Moates QH. They would be great if staying n/a, but I don't see the need to spend the $$ for something I know I can't use later with forced induction.

As for the E4OD, I have not seen where anyone has successfully used one with MS or Micro. I've read a lot of posts about guys wanting to do it and speculating as to how to do it, but no one that I am aware of has actually done it. Control of the EPC seems to be the sticking point as it is current controlled and not PWM like a lot of other transmissions. I know of one guy who made his own controller, but he is a little tight lipped and not interested in pursuing it any further.

Reality check: I kinda got wound up to do something, but now I may back burner this project for a little while. We did some clean up around our house last weekend and I've decided I have way too much junk sitting around. I need to concentrate on decluttering and just getting rid of stuff I will never use.

                      • I believe that this is the thread Ed is looking for:

Finally getting started on a shop after moving here back in 2011. I had a 20x24 at my previous house and it was fantastic, but ugly. It looked like a boring garage

Google is your friend on these kinds of searches. I plugged in BBR shop Bangshift and it was the first result.

                          • Oopsie. Just bought a turbo. It's an eBay HT60. I did a ton of reading over on the turboforums about what to use on a mild big block. The HT60 recommendation came up a lot. Ebay has a 15%-off coupon today so I crossed my fingers and clicked "Buy It Now". Haha

The plan (and I'm sticking to it this time!) is:
                            • 552 short block in it with the EFI engine top end and a hyd flat tappet cam (unless I come across hyd roller stuff at a price I can tolerate)
                            • Wire up my Megasquirt and use it for fuel and spark.
                            • Use my C6 instead of the E4OD. Mainly because I know it will handle anything I throw at it and I don't have to buy some gizmo to control it.
                            • Likely will swap in my other 9" that has tall gears with the spool. It has 4.30's in it right now which might be ok with the tall tires.
                            • Upgrade fuel system a bit. Prob will use the A1000 from the Mustang.
Injectors will be a big ? as well as the torque converter and driveshaft. I have a stock C6 converter as well as the one I had in the Mustang that flashed to 5000+. Neither of which are likely good candidates though.

                            So.... here we go!

                            • For reference, your Megasquirt 1 (on the 2.2 board right?) does not do CAN communication for a transmission controller. But it appears you are not going in that direction anyways.
                              Escaped on a technicality.

                              • Yeah, 2.2 board w/ MS-xtra code.

I was probably going to use a US Shift controller if I stayed with the E4OD. I just don't thing this E4OD will stay together and I think the truck will work well with highway friendly rear gears.
