My Turbo6 sounds "moany" and I know it's running too little timing and burning the fuel in the headers. You mentioned a header leak which would peg your gauge lean with the reversion pulses pulling outside air into the tube.

Well we worked on it some more today.
We fired it up and watched the vacuum gauge. Vacuum would start out at 15 then drop to 5 when it goes moany. They way it is acting is making me think the pushrod length is not right. We are running the Crane "Cobra" roller rockers. Since they are non-adjustable, we never though twice about the pushrods maybe being too long and holding the valves open a skosh. We found the stock rockers and we swapped them back in.
Buttoned it all back up and the battery didn't have enough juice to spin it over. So it either has more cranking compression now or the ignition is advanced too far. I don't think it has too much advance because last I checked it was at 20 deg and it spun over much easier before the rocker change.
One thing is for sure, I need to run a dedicated ground from the rear mount battery to the block or I just need to move the battery back to the front. I'm tired of habing charging issues. Should have just left it up front.
We also relocated the idler pulley into a position that prevents the belt from rubbing on itself. Previously it was mounted too low and that allowed the tensioner to mash it too low. I will trim it up, smooth it up amd paint it later.
Inching up on a solution!

Rocker change made no difference or if it did, the difference is indiscernible. So we can sort of rule out them as being a part of the problem.... unless the pushrod length is just so jacked up that the stockers are no better. I don't think so though. Moved timing where it was happier and it was at 32 deg at 1000ish rpm.
Next move is to pull the carb and intake. I'll go through the carb and take a looky at the lifters and cam. The oil is very clean so I do not expect any flat cam surprises. Pressure was 60ish psi cold and does not go down a whole lot.
I assumed A LOT about the condition of this carb. It literally could have no metering block gaskets and I would not know. Haha. The intake gaskets look like they might be at slightly different heights so they may be causing a vacuum leak. We just have to go back and revisit all this stuff to make sure it's right. Time is getting short!
I added a 4 quicky gauge lead from the rear mounted battery (-) to the block and lo and behold, the starter spins with authority now. Funny how DC current works.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Actually the next move is to check for vacuum leaks with the propane torch. If that does not reveal anything, I am going to pull the timing cover and verify the cam is installed properly. 15 bucks for some gaskets and peace of mind is well worth it.
This thing is driving me nuts.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Lunch time propane test did not reveal any vacuum leaks.
Next is a compression test to see if it is way high or way low. Either can be an indicator of a mis-aligned timing set. I will probably do that right after work today.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Good news. Compression test showed 130psi on every hole I tested. Right about what I expect it to be on a 8.9:1 engine at our elevation. So, that tells me the cam timing is ok. Wheew, I am not going crazy after all.
While I had the plugs out, I noticed that 1,2,5,8 were dark and 3,4,6,7 were light. Obviously, the first 4 are getting fuel and the others are not.
I put the plugs back in and just for grins I swapped it to the HO/351 firing order. It started, but was obviously only running on 4 cylinders.
That just leaves the carb. So, off it came.

Rebuild time! These kits are awesome and you get a lot of parts for the price.

Started tearing the carb apart. Found a few issues. The base plate screws were not tight and there was a BIG glob of something in the needle/seat. One thing I noticed was the base plate only had 6 screws out of a possible 8. I thought this was an issue until I googled it and realized Holley leaves them out on purpose. Those 2 are the ones that could fall in the motor if they ever came loose.

Carb rebuild went good. Bolted it on and it works good. Engine runs way better now, but still has random lifter clatter. I drained the oil, but it was typical first start up oil. Dark with cam break-in lube, but I could not see any sparklies in it. I was growing skeptical of the Summit lifters, so I felt it was time to pull the intake and check everything out once and for all.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Off came the intake and everything so far looks good. Lifter faces on the passenger side all look great. I decided to check my lifter preload because I didn't have a clue what it really was. I disassembled the lifter, drained it (because it was rock hard) and set up my dial indicator. The verdict: 0.045". A skosh more than I think I should need, but that is easily corrected.
I really think I will throw a new set of lifters in it while I am here. I am seeing that these Summit lifters do not have the greatest reputation.

After doing a TON of reading on how hydraulic lifters work (and don't work), I concluded that these lifters are randomly collapsing once the engine gets up to operating temp. Some have crutched this by running heavier oil, but I had 10w40 in it already. I could go to 20w50, but oil pressure has been good so I'm not ready to go there just yet. The collapsing is further exacerbated by the the stiffer valve springs. I chose these springs (TFS-16514) in order to match our installed height. Supposedly the fix is to run an anti-pump up lifter. These lifters have tighter internal tolerances and are less likely to bleed oil off, collapse and cause clatter. I ordered a set yesterday. Hopefully this will fix our problem. It is irritating because it runs and sounds so good when cold!

Bummer. Cam is dead. 15 lobes/lifters look great, but #5 exhaust lobe/lifter is toast. We will feex.

Yeah it sucks. I neglected to use any sort of break-in additive and it bit me in the butt.
Additionally, #5 exhaust is the last lifter to get oil on that side in the oiling system. I'm going to make sure the feed galley is not gooked up or something.
Strangely, #5 exhaust is not one of the ones I remember making noise. lol
I already have the new lifters, so I ordered another Summit 3601 cam last night. Hard to beat a $72 camshaft. lolLife is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
