  • I went to test n tune tonight before the shootout. There were a gazillion people there. I made one slow pass. It was slow because it launched, lifted the drivers side tire, and headed towards the centerline. I got out of it and then motored on to a rather boring 13.02. haha Motor got warm on that pass, I thought I threw the belt, but it was still on. I let it cool down, fiddled with the carb, then let it idle and drove around the pits and it stayed right at 185. Strange. I will check it over tomorrow

        • I'll start by saying it's nice to load a running racecar back on the trailer after an event! Got home a 2am last night.

The weekend was a blast. Ford won this year. 50-something to 30-something. The Buick camp really didn't bring the fast cars out this year. The fastest in the Buick camp was a mid 9 second Pontiac Trans-Am and the Fords had several in the 8's. Anyway we all had a good time.

T-N-T was a bust because there were so many people there. I made the one pass and then my battery croaked so i just parked it until the next day.

Saturday I stopped by and picked up a battery and some valve cover breathers because I left mine at home. (among other things) Started to put the battery in and dang it, it was 1/4" taller than the old one. and would not fit under my hold-down. Borrowed a drill from a friend and some bits from another guy, but still could not get it to fit right. Finally I just removed what was left of the factory battery tray and everything was great. Got teched it, fiddled with the idle, base timing and stuff. Made a qualifying pass, it launched all crazy again and seemed to be lazy on the top end. It only picked up 15 mph from the 1/8th to the 1/4 and the motor was getting warm during the run. By comparison, a bad run in Amarillo netted a 29mph gain. Took my time slip over to a buddy and we talked about it. We decided it needed a lot more fuel and maybe had a vacuum leak. One of the thing I left at home was my jet set.... grrrr... I asked a couple of guys near me, and finally went over to a guy I know from the 460 board and he had a set. Went back and changed the jets and found that the brake booster vacuum line was split right at the carb base. Hello vacuum leak. Fixed that and adjusted the float level a bit. I decided to remove the air filter lid in the event the vent tubes were too close to it. I went up 4 on the primary and 5 on the seconday to 86/93. Time came and I was paired with a 12.50 Buick GN. He had lane choice. We stage, light flash yellow (pro tree) then green and the Mustang walks the back end a bit and then goes 1.82 in the 60'. Not spectacular but nice since I treed the other guy by 2 tenths and he only went 2.42. Shift lite (set at 6000) comes on fast and I pull second and it spins a sec and grabs and then the light is on again! Pull 3rd and it starts hauling butt and the shift light comes on as I am going through the traps. When the light came on, I knew it was a MUCH better run because it had never done that before! My brain instantly starts calculating what 6000 rpm in 3rd equates to in mph! Gassed it to the time slip shack and picked up my slip. 11.89@116 with a 1.82 60 foot. YEEEEEESSSSSS. The Buick slowed to a 13.42 so I beat him to the finish line by dang near 2 seconds! lol Of course, I was accused of sandbagging. I wouldn't call it sandbagging, I'd call it making the car finally start to run right.... and having an opponent who was sleeping at the tree. It gained 22 mph in the last half, so I think it probably could have used even more fuel.

I'll post up some vids when my friends get them uploaded. A buddy came by and said my launch was awesome. I tried to watch it on his little screen, but it was hard to see anything.

Overall a great time and it finally started to run like it should.

          Wheew.

My car next to my buddy John Turpen's super nice (9.5 second!) 1984 GT350.

          • Not bad at all! I guess there's more air down there than you're used to. Good to see it's all coming together....at last...
