There is at least a pound of dirt on that cross memeber, and I bet the front sway bar weights over 10. just trying to help you lighten it

I took care of that today sway bar is out, most of the dirt is cleaned off. And I cut off most of the steering hoses and looped the remains. And bashed in the firewall for distributor clearance, if it needs it. And moved the brake line. Also did the TURDBIRD emblem on the trunk, but no picture yet.

I thought I was the only one who converted to manual steering using that technique. Folks claim that it would be "better" if I installed an actual manual box in Mutt.

It would be better. There is slop in the spool valve, etc.

I've bypassed or eliminated pumps before , the effort seems to be higher with the power box as opposed to the manual but if all your doing is going straight , the I wouldn't mess with changing it .

The effort being higher, is probably related to the fact that the ratio on a power box is usually faster than that on a manual box (the manual box has more turns, lock to lock)

We find the Ford boxes last longer if they run the pump as long as possible before losing..
If we just looped the box's lines, they tend to break..
Again.. Different platform.. Pickup and large car tend to take permanent vacations unpumped

I had a power rack in another car years ago, that I looped the lines, and drove it on the street that way for quite a while.

I'm not too concerned about this one, it won't get much use.

I set the engine in this morning, but didn't get the trans in yet. I also mounted the rear tires on the new circle track rims. And I got some new used tires for the front, but haven't had a chance to install them on the car.

it's getting close...still need to get the steering column in, seat mounted, shifter installed, and do all the wiring. The rest seems to be about ready to go. And these pics are from earlier in the day, since then I added fuel line, vacuum lines, throttle linkage, and a few other things. Click image for larger version

It seems to fit decently (with an application of your skill).

it's tight all the way around...but it's in there!

                                kind of an interference fit
