There's actually a bit missing from the NHRA history. The idea of racing in a straight line from a dead stop for 1/4 mile did not originate with automobiles. Ever heard of a "Quarter Horse"? It's not because they are 1/4 horse and 3/4 something else. Some cutting horses were prized for their ability to take off quickly after a cow and stay on it's tail for long enough to catch it. As you can imagine, it wasn't long before cowboys were racing each other, and pretty soon, looking for the best horses for this. A bit of selective breeding, and there you go - quarter horses. An interesting tidbit, told to me by an old horse breeder back in my horse days.
