  • BBF For Sale - This Is a Special Thing

Maybe this goes in the "For Sale" section but there's a story here so I thought I'd post it in "General".

I've mentioned the Sanders family on here before - they're the ones who got me interested in the preformance end of the car thing and made me realize that hot rods were not just built by "special" people living in California and that any of us could do it. I went to HS with Larry Sanders and we lost touch for decades but in the last few years I was lucky to get reconnected. Anyhow, Larry has taken a turn for the worse and now has an advanced form of Parkinson's Disease and he's slipping away from us.

He started building this engine with the goal of doing just a little more drag racing while he still could - but he can't. A friend finished the assembly and now they need to find it a new home and for WAY less than they have in it. Attached is a link to the ad. I hope one of us or maybe someone we know can put it to use.

I am guessing it is .030 over with a 4.140 stroke crank. Eagle does make a 4320 crank in that size. The heads appeared to be no-name but with competent port work they should flow good enough to feed a 501I. A little confused with what appears to be a Weiand Stealth intake for a drag application but if it has a weaksuck cam in it for the street that might be OK.

Let me know what you hear as I am always interested in hearing about 385 series porn!

I don't know much about how the engine came together but Larry has built MANY engines so I'm guessing this is a pretty well balanced package. No clue on the cam specs, etc. but feel free to contact the poster (I think he's the guy who did the final assembly) and no doubt he would happily fill you in.

I meant no disrespect to the builder or the combination. I tend to screw together stuff that doesn't fit neatly in the accepted parameters of what a street engine should be. Lars will get all the nitty gritty details. I sure does look nice

Probably a lot nicer piece than some of the magazine BBFs (i.e. see link). The Stealth is a decent intake with a broad torque curve, but it doesn't have the curb appeal of a tunnel ram, IMO.

I know Larry planned to put this in a Fox body that he had and that it would be strictly a drag car (IIRC). Pretty sure their local track is 1/8 mile so he would have picked bits for that application. He had done a few 385-series engines before so I'm sure he picked what would work for his purposes out of the available stuff on the market - he ordered up all the bits new for this engine rather than building it out of what he had in his shed, which was LOADED with goodies (I got to peek in there). I think most of the speed bits from the shed have been sold but I'll check with his wife and see if there's anything left and let y'all know. He had stuff for BBF, SBF, SBC, and who knows what else.

I have a Stealth on my pickup so I am familiar with them. I also believe that a stroked 385 (even the itty bitty 4.140) can easily deal with a nice single plane with the proper cam / carb combination. Again, I LOVE 385 series engine porn and it does look very nice and probably will run very good
