  • Reverse Intake Engine!?

A friend of mine was at York (Pa) this past weekend for the Street Rod Nats. told me about it this afternoon and I just had to find it.

Blew my mind, I never would have thought of doing this, Pretty cool I must say.

People were doing that with Buick Nail Heads decades ago.
    Escaped on a technicality.

What's so cool about having the Intake valve SMALLER than the Exhaust valve?

Its different, unique, in my opinion its cool , I'm not too concerned with the inner workings and how the exhaust being in the wrong place might possibly rip a hole in the space/time continuum.

I saw something similar on a flathead Ford once; I thought it was a fresh approach.

Nothing at all, but it would sure gather a crowd at a show. I think it has a reasonable amount coolness..

As I understand SBC heads, there is no actual advantage to this. On the nailhead, due to the port configurations it was believed to flow better and increase power significantly - I haven't seen any dyno numbers. On either engine, it's cool for sure.

X2 On the flathead, I read that it's actually more efficient to run it that way.

                    Re: Reverse Intake Engine!?

Many flathead Ford V8s were reverse-flowed to get the exhaust ports out of the water jackets. Buddy Shay ran a V8-60 midget that was both reverse-flow and reverse rotation... and mounted in the chassis upside-down.

Bruce Crower did a SBC for Indy with both the intake and exhaust ports on the outboard side of the heads.

Didn't they do that on small blocks in Indy car style racing to put the bee's nest 180 * headers on them ?

You guys laugh, but IIRC the new Ford designed diesel (scorpion) is designed backwards like this.

Exhaust exits in the valley where the turbo is mounted.

Commercial V engines have had this design for a long time.

I read about the Ford diesel motor, I liked the engineer's comment about the only reason to have the conventional design was for packaging - as it is smaller - but with turbos, it's actually an easier package to put the exhaust out the top....
