2010 Grand National Roadster Show Race Cars (Click a Thumbnail to Enlarge Photos)
-
This gallery is from the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona. Here are more than 100 bitchin race cars and dragsters from the "History of the Race Car" exhibit in building 9 along with several others from all around the show. Here is Mr. Norm's Super Demon.
-
It's hard to argue with an altered-wheelbase '66 Nova sporting an injected small-block. We'd die to drive it.
-
The Mooneyes Streamliner.
-
Penske was part of arguably the coolest Camaro racing effort in the late '60s. We'd love to turn some corners in one of the famous blue cars.
-
Ed Windfield's '26 Track T was just one of the killer early race cars on display. Walking through building 9 is like walking through time. If you are a race fan, you won't be disappointed in the cars on hand.
-
Tommy Thompson's Goldenrod Streamliner was campaigned in the '50s through the late '70s and started out with borrowed Flathead power. Later, Oldsmobile gave him an engine which was sleeved down to 385 inches. The car went as fast as 246 mph.
-
The Bill Barry Pontiac " Tempestuous" Tempest still runs in NHRA's Heritage Series today.
-
The Bean Bandit Car Club had their streamliner on display along with tons of build photos. It's a must see.
-
-
The interesting thing about all of these historic racers is the amount of work in making bodies for them. We can only dream of watching the guys in the '40s hammering these out over a hammer form.
-
Another Bean Bandits team car, this one from Vintage Hammer Garage. It's a Rear Engine Modified Roadster.
-
The Mooneyes Dragster is cool too see every time. We're lucky it's here close to us in Southern California, but for those of you who haven't seen it, it's bitchin.
-
The Kugels sure know how to build killer roadsters.
-
The late great Dale Earnhardt Sr. was represented well.
-
The Team Losi Indy Car looks like it would be great fun to drive.
-
This Hot Wheels Champ Car sports one of the coolest paint jobs you'll see on an open wheeler.
-
We love the fact that this all-aluminum Cobra gets beat on. Check out all the chips and dings.
-
Our own Brian Lohnes almost lost his mind when he saw this photo. It's a 1956 Fiat Betoletti Grand Prix transporter and it's so cool it defies description. More info on it is in the next photo.
-
-
The Fiat Bertoletti transporter is right hand drive, has seating for 6, and includes room to haul 3 cars. We want it bad.
-
We assume this was the area where spares would be hauled, but we would set it up to sleep in too.
-
This is the drivers seat, but notice the passenger's front seats look like their came from a movie theater.
-
-
-
-
Darrel Waltrip rules. Boogiddy boogiddy boogiddy.
-
Now that everyone is poor, sand car sales are down, but that doesn't mean there aren't tons of them out there in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. Big power and tons of suspension travel make these things big bucks. Trick doesn't begin to describe this one.
-
LS power. Twin turbo LS power is not uncommon around here.
-
Mike Mitchell's Revolution was sponsored by Champion Speed Shop, and quite frankly gives us lumber.
-
This A/FX Thunderbolt is campaigning on the NHRA Heritage Series in 2010. Wheels up launches are promised.
-
The Kugel and Lefevers Firebird is just one of many land speed cars at the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show. We've been 226 mph, and can't imagine what 300 is like.
-
The famed So Cal Chevrolet HHR looks as good as ever because it's not the same car that wrecked years ago on the salt. That one was a total loss, but Silky and the gang at Socal Speedshop made version two just as nice.
-
Several front-engine Top Fuel Dragsters as well as Fuel Altereds are on hand outside. They are doing cacklefests multiple times per day. We'll bring you video of Sunday afternoons action.
-
-
-
-
The Over The Hill Gang was always one of our favorite teams back in the '70s and '80s.
-
-
The Perry and Loyd front-engine Flathead powered dragster looks to have an NHRA legal cage in it, which means you'll be able to see this thing doing burnouts and racing down the 1/4 mile like it was designed to do. We can't wait.
-
-
The Outer Limits altered-wheelbase car is full of injected Hemi which we approve of, and is much cleaner than most of the cars running back in the day.
-
The Poison Arrow streamliner is as small as it looks, and is powered by one pissed off motorcycle engine.
-
-
The El Cid Cobra is even here. Bitchin.
-
-
-
-
The NHRA Safety Safari, the Wally Parks Motorsports Museum, and many other vendors are on hand supporting this event as well. With 600 cars inside and another 600+ outside, the Grand National Roadster show is bigger and better than ever.
-
-
The Mondello and Matsubara Fiat Topolino altered is the picture of what a Topolino should look like.
-
Circle track fans won't be disappointed either as there are midgets, sprints, and track roadsters everywhere. We want one.
-
-
Based on the rubber all balled up on the tires, we'd guess the Casale Engineering Spl. gets run around the track on occasion, even if it's only for fun.
-
-
This Scarab was powered by an injected small-block we couldn't get enough of.
-
-
-
-
This would never sit in our garage. We'd drive it on the street daily because there is no reason a midget like this wouldn't bring a smile to your face.
-
-
-
Next to the "door," the driver's name is listed. Yep, it says Jeff Gordon.
-
-
The number 2 Unser driven car is the prime example of sexy open wheel cars.
-
-
-
Fellow Milers Club members Ferguson Racing brought their streamliner out for the show. Don Ferguson Jr. set a XXF/Blown Fuel Streamliner record of 300.462 in 2009 at Bonneville. The XXF means it's got an Ardun headed Flathead in it.
-
-
Another Miler is BMR Racing. The BMR Racing '32 5 window is going after the XXF Vintage Gas Altered record in 2010 with Alan "Fogi" Fogliadini behind the wheel.
-
-
-
If you are a drag racing fan from the '60s and '70s, you have to love an Anglia.
-
If you like Willy's gassers, there are several to stare out here at the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show.
-
The So-Cal Speed Shop Team has a bunch of cars on display all over the show. This one may be our favorite.
-
-
-
The Cotton Chopper dragster looks scary. With that said, we would get in it right this second and drive it.
-
The King and Hansen belly tank lakester has what could be the most perfect patina ever.
-
Even though it's a recreation, the Warth-Hilborn Streamliner is quite possibly one of the sexiest cars in the show. There is something about this little car, and I do mean little, that just does it for us.
-
-
The BUG!!! Credited with being the first "dragster", this car is historic. And we love it.
-
This sign is laying on the floor behind the Bug.
-
-
Stone, Woods, and Cook.
-
-
-
-
Gene Winfield's "Thing". We love it. Gene is now 80 years old, and still racing like mad. We see him at every El Mirage event, and he's always at the salt in Bonneville as well. He's amazingly friendly and cool.
-
-
The Meteor is too cool. It's made from all kinds of parts, but is still all there. We dig it. More info follows.
-
-
-
-
-
The metal work is perfect. We stared at this front-engine dragster for a while.
-
Pinstripers are on hand painting all kinds of stuff, and selling cool sunglasses, toolboxes, toilet seats, helmets, etc.
-
-
This Ardun headed circle track '32 has some stories to tell.
-
-
Roadster classes at Bonneville are extremely competitive and very exclusive. The 792 car is Ardun headed and as beautiful as it is fast.
