I asked this question of a friend of mine who is an Engineer at Lubrizol which is one of, if not the biggest, manufacturer of additives that go into all the oil we use. He told me, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference what oil you use these days as long as you change it. Anything else is personal preference.I R Bob

My daddy, after he passed away, all of us were going through all of his stuff left behind.
Daddy was a big believer in lubrication. He had cases of oil. He loved to lubricate stuff, he thought lubrication was the key to longivity.
It didn't help him live longer, but it sure did help his lawnmower and other tools. I mean, so much oil in his storage building...so much oil. Lots. More than most folks have.Charter member of the Turd NuggetsComment

What do I run- Texaco Halvoline in the daily drivers because that is what the quick lube that changes the oil uses. The diesel pickup gets Rotella, but that will change to Delo when I change the oil (if I ever get enough miles on it for that). The hot rod gets Delo + zinc additive.
I have used Delo 400 for over 25+ years (as long as I have been driving)- all the engines I have pulled apart that ran it were clean inside. In the mid 80's, I pulled a 301 Pontiac that had been run strictly on Quacker State. That was the most gummed up and dirty engine I have ever seen. I won't even use Quacker State in my lawn mower. Why think when you can be doing something fruitful?Comment

Well, there ya go, The Quaker State folks sure do spend a lot on commercials on TV, but there ya go.Originally posted by Orange65 View PostWhat do I run- Texaco Halvoline in the daily drivers because that is what the quick lube that changes the oil uses. I didn't intend to bash Quaker State, but....apparently it's true.Charter member of the Turd NuggetsComment

Hey.......you askedOriginally posted by KeithTurk View PostI just love this discussion cause it's honestly so far on the wrong side of the decimal point when it comes to our junk.... honestly I've never worn out an oil in a race engine....Thom

Delo in my diesel
Chevron in my junk (it's the cheapest)
Valvoline in my classic cars
Mobile 1 in my new cars
never Pennzoil. I'll post up a couple pictures later to explain why. And to that extent I guess I disagree with you Keith, even with regular changes, a Pennzoil motor will last 100k miles then plug up solid - even with regular oil changes.Doing it all wrong since 1966Comment

Then the odometer on my 1990 Cougar, 137,000 and my wifes 2003 Sable, 126,000, must be way off. Cougar has only regular Pennzoil, Sable Synthetic Pennzoil. When I traded in my Corolla it had 120,000 and only Pennzoil.Originally posted by SuperBuickGuy View PostAnd to that extent I guess I disagree with you Keith, even with regular changes, a Pennzoil motor will last 100k miles then plug up solid - even with regular oil changes.
Cougar has gone on 2 DW, and I drive it regularly in the summer. None of them are Babied.Last edited by nesabo; July 3, 2012, 05:57 AM.Neal

I won a 1990 Geo Prizm in a divorce.
You know you're an optimist when you buy a full set of tires for a car that has 180,000 ,miles on it.
Silver Bullet (the car) puked his guts out in the parking lot at the Charlotte airport. The motor was still running fine, but I was sure I couldn't get a new radiator for a car that old.
Bullet got me there. One last time. To the airport. He didn't let me down.
He had some oil in him. I don't know what kind.Charter member of the Turd NuggetsComment

And when I drain the oil out of the hotrod ..... I use it in the lawn mower, pressure washer and golfcart/dirtbikes/atvs ....
I found a guy on craigs that dropped off a 55 gal drum for me to put my used oil in. When I reach the 40 gal mark in it, he picks it up and gives me .55 a gal for the used stuff.Whiskey for my men ... and beer for their horses!Comment

I've pretty much run 'em all and I can't say I've seen a lot of difference. I run the Buzz Bomb on VR1 and add a jug of GM EOS for the first start up/change (flat tappet). Truck gets whatever Dave (my buddy who runs the local repair shop) has in the 55 gallon drum (he does the change cheaper than I can buy the stuff). Same with the HHR. I have a box of Mobil 1 for the 'Stang for whenever I get off my butt and fire him up - found it on sale.
