    A Milestone

Turbo Pro Mod racer Mike Moran recorded the first known doorslammer five-second run yesterday at a test session in Valdosta, Ga.

Moran's Monte Carlo stopped the timers at 5.97-seconds at 250 miles per hour

That's amazing. As a young man, dragsters were running in the 8's - like 40 years ago or so.

I thought Stott ran in the 5's in a pro mod a while back? Might be wrong, though

Love those turbos. Unbelievable amounts of power.

I wonder where we'd be if the '80s turbo era had continued through the '90s to today. Seems like turbo development took a nap for about 15-20 years.

                    Re: A Milestone

Stott was the first guy to run 5 seconds in a door slammer....BUT...as Spidey said, it was at a test session and the car was not legal for any sort of competiton at the time.

That car NOW would be legal for ADRL action, but then it was a total, all-out effort to be the first in the 5's. Jimmy Rector was his crew chief at the time. Mitch is good people and I got to hang out with him when I did the PR for Josh Hernandez and his team.

John Zappia from Australia was the first guy to ever run a 5 in a competition run. The rules in the Australian "Top Doorslammer" category are looser than the formal (read:non ADRL) pro mod rules here, so making a direct comparison is kind of impossible.

Josh Hernandez was the first guy to ever run a 5 in US competition, making the lap at the 2006 IHRA World Finals at Rockingham Dragway. I was certain it was going to happen in 2005 and I thought Jay Payne was going to do it. He ran 6.00 at Ennis that year, but never bettered it. It took one of the last Pro Mod races of the year for Hernandez to close the deal.

The most impressive part of Moran's run is the freaking MPH. 250 is insane and point to just how much horsepower that car is making. The guy deserves all the credit in the world for sticking to it and I hope he becomes a world beater. Hopefully he can get the thing dialed in and consistent, but man, that's a monster lap.

Is it really the turbo development that is the reason behind the times???

I think it is more that the electronics have come around to harness the power and being able to put a good tune up in the motor with EFI.

Now days we have datalogers, EFI, Digital 7 boxes to control timing, boost controllers, traction control, better tires, better shocks.

No doubt that electronics have played a huge roll.
