New PHR, 454 LSX, and anger issues?

So i opened up my newest PHR today. I saw the GMPP has a crate 454 LSX motor!! I thought "wow thats neat!" Then i saw that they pulled 620 hp and 590 ft.lbs of tq out of this setup with a tiny cam!! Oh man thats awesome! It probably has a little lope, is easy to drive and is going to be putting 3400 lb cars in the 10's! Wow! Then I noticed what should have made me happy...that it pulled 25 mpg in a Trans Am all across the US on power tour, and if im not mistaken thats with a carb?
    So heres the break down
    -LSX 454 ci
    -620 hp, 590 ft lbs of tq {450 ft lbs at 2400 rpm}
    -carb
    -25 mpg!!
    WOW!!

So I thought about it for a second and i got really pissed off...i mean really mad. It dawned on me.. If they {GM} can make 620 hp and pull down 25 mpg with this super streetable LSX beast. Why can they not make a truck that gets 30-35 mpg with a motor that makes half that power? I mean WTF? It really is a bunch of BS. I know a truck weighs more and all that but come on, if you can pull 25mpg with 620 hp then you should be able to make changes to cut power and fuel consumption, and optimize a motor that will make great power and pull 5-10 mpg more in a truck. I think were all getting screwed in a big way, and this may very well be proof. Am I out of line here?

    your out of line..
    a few things..
trucks heavy and a brick in the wind..
a t/a is lite, and aero
and in this case the cubes.. alow alow a lot less pedal to move out..
the truck has to get great mpg and pass emissions,
trucks are also use'n a bigger, power robbing drivetrain..
the 2002 ls t/a engine isn't a lot different from the 5.3 truck..
    one gets 26+ and 330hp
and one get 19mpg .. and is a smaller engine..
it's the otherstuff outside the engine..
put that lsx in a truck.. and watch the mpg go down

            Detailed Description
            LSX 454 Crate Engine

An engine with 454 cubic inches will always be assosiated with higher performance Chvys, and that tradition continues with the all new LSX454 crate engine. We started with the new LSX bowtie block, stuffed it with an all-forged, super tough rotating assembly, bolted on a pair of our new deep breathing LSX six-bolt cylinder heads and topped of the combination with a high rise intake & four barrel induction system.

The new LSX six bolt cylinder heads are based on the race-derived LS7 heads that help deliver more than 500 horsepower in the Corvette Z06. They enable tremendous low end torque and great high RPm power. The LSX 454 is delivered in deluxe form, so you get everything from the carburetor to the water pump (oil pan not included). It also comes dressed with great looking, all new orange powder-coated valve covers with 'LSX 454" logos engraved and painted in black.

            Note:

Oil pan and oil pump pickup are not included. LSX valve covers do not have coil mount provisions, coils will need to be relocated

Calibrating for emissions is a tightrope walk.

It's easy to calibrate for fuel economy when emissions are not an issue.

The problem is that HC and NOx are both regulated - and are opposites - when you run close to stoich thanks to the O2 sensors - life is good - but as you start to go lean (remember the lean burn chryslers?) NOX goes up like crazy - and you fail the emissions test. When you go Rich - HC goes up - NOX goes down.
There's always something new to learn.

Which cars of the 40s/50s got that kind of mileage? the Studebaker Champ? with it's 164 cubic inch tiny 6? at 50 mph, with overdrive? A typical Chevy back then weighed a bit over 3000 lbs, and it didn't get that kind of mileage, more like 15. A new truck weighs well over 4000

LS engine Chevy half ton trucks get 20 mpg on the road, they sit about twice as high as a sporty car, and weigh at least 30% more, so they're doing pretty good.

The 1957 Dodge Sierra Wagon in this week's Old Press Photos blog item, the one that sits 9 with room to spare, shipped 400lbs lighter than a new Challenger.

                      Insane.

It takes a certain amount of energy to push a car down the road at a given speed. A Chevy PU is not using all 320 hp to push it down the road, even at 100 mph. And that LSX is certainly not using all 620 hp to push whatever car it was in down the highway at 60 mph.

ls7gto's 496 BBC has gotten over 20 mpg, and it was making that kind of hp at the time. It goes in the 10's.

Somebody told me Gas Mileage depended on how much Torque was being produced
Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

Gas mileage depends on a lot of things. It even depends on who's calculating it.
