Looking for opinions on the use of Hydrolic oil, like John Deere hydrolic and trani fluid, the good stuff, in a car auto trani. Just talked to a trani shop and thats all they use. Say it handles heat better, lubes better and also has more cleaning properties. Vince See ya all again in June and Sept.

Re: Automatic trani fluids
after seeing how sensitive some of the newer cars are to fluid level and type - I sure wouldn't want to risk it - unless you're looking for a temporary fix to limp one along a little while before an overhaul.
Didn't GM guys used to run type F fluid 'cause it shifted better in the th350 and 400?There's always something new to learn.Comment

Re: Automatic trani fluids
Lentech, the guys who built my DW AOD recommenced the John Deere stuff when I had it rebuilt for DW '07 and that was what was in it for that tour. The Deere fluid was their #2 recommendation after another product I couldn't find locally, Trick Shift was #3. The Deere fluid was $11 a GALLON so in it went. It is noticeably heavier in viscosity than regular tranny fluid.
I found that it held up fine but I had a delayed 1-2 shift such that I had to set the shift light at 5000 RPM to get actual 6900 shift point, I could just watch the tach for the 2-3.
I replaced it with good old B & M Trick Shift Type F and the shift now happens when I bang the gear not 1900 RPM later and otherwise everything runs just fine. Trick shift runs $4.50 a quart with NHRA discount or damn near double the price.Drag Week 2006 & 2012 - Winner Street Race Big Block Naturally Aspirated - R/U 2007 Broke DW '05 and Drag Weekend '15 Coincidence?Comment

Re: Automatic trani fluids
They claim its 'super" Type F in that it has higher resistance to heat degradation, better lubrication properties while enhancing clutch life yadda yadda. I had good luck with it back in the day and given the guys who build and warranty the tranny recommend it I'm using it as they don't recommend synthetic which I use for everything else. Besides its Ford Blue.Drag Week 2006 & 2012 - Winner Street Race Big Block Naturally Aspirated - R/U 2007 Broke DW '05 and Drag Weekend '15 Coincidence?Comment

Re: Automatic trani fluids
How do you figure it wasn't made to stand heat? Ever been around a tractor or a piece of construction equipment being run at full load all day. They get hot.Originally posted by MentalMuffinManhydr oil. wasn't made for the killer heat in a tranny,,
I'd question this..
as heat is the killer of trans..
you said they use a mix of both.. whats the mix

Re: Automatic trani fluids
I had forgotten that Bill had that issue with his, but here is the skinny. We've been using hydraulic oil for years in NHRA Stock and Super Stock. Everyone does. Even a lot of the guys with Trick Shift decals. It stands up well, it's cheap, and it keeps the trans looking new and lovely inside. I haven't used the John Deer before, but it's more expensive than some of the others used. Call any of the real race trans builders and they will give you a recommendation as well. Everyone has different brands. Depending on where you live in the country, you can get it at tractor supply in a 5 gallon pail for less than $20."A cross thread is better than a lock washer."
