I'm screwed. It's gonna be 2 degrees this weekend where I'm going. I'm guessing that sandals and shorts won't work.

What do I do? How do you stand outside all day in 2-degree weather and live to tell about it?

I have to do this every wednesday for my auctions sale.
At that temp, double up on some "good" thermal underwear, thermal socks, hoody,
Walls(or Carhart if you got the cheese) jacket, ski mask, and thinsulated gloves and boots.

It's fairly easy, really.
-Take lots of warm socks. Easiest article of clothing to get wet; wet=frozen=frostbite.
-Take several jackets of differing thicknesses. That way you can layer to perfection.
-Wear long underwear as your base coat, then a loose-fitting t-shirt over that. You
need airflow within the confines of the clothing, or you'll get sweaty=cold=frozen.
-I usually wear jeans instead of Carhartt pants; either works, but jeans are comfier.
-Boots, like socks are gonna be key. Get a pair with Thinsulate and a waterproof seal.
-Light gloves(or you'll sweat) plus those handwarming pouches.
-A good cloth or fleece hat and a scarf.
That's it. The most common mistakes people make are OVER-dressing and not taking
care of their feet as well as other areas. 2 degrees is way too f'in cold, DF. Brrrrrr!

Some good advice so far. I can only reiterate to layer up, really important. A pair of boots and a good jacket are a must. Don't forget your tuque (hat), gloves, and a scarf or neck-warmer.

This week we're seeing -20 to -30 *C (-4 to -32 *F) in my part of Canukistan . The wind at these temps is wicked.

Be sure to get a pic of yourself in your winter digs..."Here we see a So-Cal native out of his element, he has had to adapt to the new climate" :D

no buildings????

a portable heater would be good with the addition of good insulated clothing boots gloves hat etc

remember it only REALLY sucks when you get outa your warm vehicle
you will get used to it after being in the elements for a while

the best is when your day is about done and you need an airhammer to remove the snot stream from your nose

YES! carhart will keep you warm. However the clothes tend to be very stiff, so much so that if you too the jacket off, and put it on the floor, you could stand it up by itself.
But they do offer great protection.

Here's the head-scratcher for me.

I seem to recall DF having a byline in either Hot Rod or Car Craft going on and on about some cockamamie trip from L.A. to Alaska with Rick Pe'we' in a flatfender Jeep during cold-weather months...and he was bragging about not having worn shoes the entire way up the Trans-Alaskan.

Seems to me he'd already have a pretty good idea on how to stay warm in subzero temps.

These guys have you covered. Can't stress it enough, layers.

When I go snowboarding I wear a pair of long underwear bottoms and top, shorts, (yes shorts, I still have to have some flexibility) a T-shirt, a sweatshirt, a good ski jacket (usually with a zip in liner) and ski pants, hat that covers your ears, and gloves. If you don't have work on anything, mits instead of gloves would be the choice. The boots I wear for this are actually made with bindings in the bottom, kind of a hybrid snow/ski boot and they work great.

Swap Carhart stuff for the ski stuff in my list. They will probably come in handy more often in the future than ski stuff would.

Keep your head, hands and feet warm and you can stand outside all day.

lol...we rebuilt a transmission today, in our uninsulated garage with only a small propane heater running. It was 7, with a high of 9. Both the hubby and I wear lots of layers, plus we are used to it...no big deal.

I agree with everyone else in the Carhartt coveralls, but here's what works for me. I head outside and run alot and I swear in my Under Armor Heatgear compression top and leggings. Might look a bit goofy but they are the ideal base layer. If you start sweating in a regular t-shirt/sweatshirt, the shirt stays wet and won't wick away the moisture like the Under Armor does. Dry clothes are a definite must!

OK, I've got an old set of Army cold-weather pants, like Carhart material with furry stuff inside. OK? Figure thermal and jeans under them.

I have Sorrel boots with thermal socks and regular socks.

On top, I figure thermals, t-shirt, sweatshirt, North Face down jacket.

I have neoprene gloves. I'm worried I'll sweat in them, but they have enough dexterity to work a camera.

On my head, do I need a full face mask? I have a Thinsulate hat.

True, I wore sandals to Alaska and back. But I will be in Wisconsin, and the news claims it was -40 today with no wind chill. I hear some guy went to the mailbox in a t-shirt and died.

If you're going to be on a lake, there's bound to be wind. Full face coverage might not be a bad idea.

I'm heading to Milwaukee in the AM.....when I getback tomorrow afternoon, I'll give a report as to how sucky it is.

I've taken pics with my Mechanix gloves on. Somewhat warm for short term.


-40 was an average day when we were in Fairbanks.
