I suggest you go to Ely and hang with Randal for the rest of the week to get somewhat acclimated.

I don't envy you on this assignment.

I have one question. Did you volunteer, or get volunteered?

Keep your head covered and feet dry.

When back inside, a shot of jack in your tea will warm you right up. Just had one of those, my ears are sweating.

Around here they sell things called "hot hands". it's a packet that you break the plastic or whatever inside of it and it gets warm and stays warm for several hours. When it dies you throw it away ( they're like .99 apiece ). I stick one in each pocket and periodically stick my hands in to warm them up.

I work out side in northern Michigan and go with carharts but have also used walmart wanabe carharts and it was ok and you can get them as one peice. I would also suggest if you don't have to drive get a flask with some whiskey, did that for a winter golf thing on a frozen lake and it was great for a warm up.

Actually, booze is NOT a good way to keep warm in the winter. Every year in Michigan the news channels would run an article detailing how it would screw you up in extreme cold. I can't recall the science right now, but it was pretty conclusive - not the way to go. However, once you're inside it might help you feel warmer.

Alcohol thins the blood making hyperthermia more likely. The danger is that the body can't tell the brain that hyperthermia is starting, therefore causing you to freeze without knowing it. Save the liquor till you done in the cold.

LAYERS!!! If you over heat your screwed too. If you start to sweat with to thick of outer wear your screwed. Layer up so you can adjust if needed. Can't over do the boots though. Keep your feet warm.

An oversized pair of mittens work well, and a pair of mechanix gloves inside them if you need to use your fingers. Wear several layers of thin clothes, starting with a pair of Under-Armour then the long johns. Last layer before coat, make a hooded sweatshirt. Then the carharts. Bibs and a coat if you need to do work, coveralls(onepiece) if your just sitting or standing around. Boots-1000 gram insulate at least and several layers of socks. My feet get cold first then the entire world sucks all day long. Don't skimp on the boots. And save the hot drinks for when you get back. Have fun. Its 12* here now, think I'll go ride the atv.

As a So. Cal. guy that's moved to the cold here is my two cents. Since it's a short trip the expense of Carharts isn't worth it. Definately get a set of thermals, bottoms at minimum, tops too for all out. Between the thermals and jeans you should be good up to about a 20mph wind. Feet, go with boots if you got them, other wise try two pairs of socks, and worse case scenerio if you can fit them get those "hot hands" packets and stickem under your toes in your shoe (with socks on). I had to do that when I first got my Skylark running up here and didn't have the firewall hole covered where the clutch rod goes through on a trip out of town, burr. For a coat, I either use a sweater inside a jacket or a sweater inside a windbreaker most the time. A heavy jacket will probably work, but a sweater and wind breaker works wonders (especially if you have thermals on too). Then lastly get a nice knit cap that can be pulled down over your ears and you should be good to go Don't let the local's make fun of you too much, over kill is definately better!

*Oh and if the wind is over 20mph, you might as well buy some cheap ski pants at walmart, that's what I wear when riding my Motorcycle between 15*F and 45*F. The carharts would work too though.
                            Escaped on a technicality.

Actually Brian, it's a "toque" (French word), not touk. You got the right idea though.

20% of your body heat goes out of the top of your head. Make sure you keep the noggin covered!! Also, don't buy cotton stuff, it doesn't insulate worth a damn.
