Just a "butt dyno" data point... Huber's played with mass of their converters, the part that's attached to the crankshaft, and found that it has a HUGE role in engine vibes in the cockpit. The difference with the heavier converter is stunning, his car was buzzy like yours with the lighter converters. They saw no differences in ET so they went with the heavier option.

In your case I know you like lightweight rotating/reciprocating mass for quick revs - and yours, frankly, out revs both my weedeater and chainsaw - but maybe a little more mass in that area would give you similar huge gains in vibe removal?

Unfortunately it tells me that the inherent 4 cylinder shake was probably in evidence, not an extreme out of balance condition. I'm dumping the solid mounts, though. I'm tired of buzzing my way through the paddock.

I'm a big enough MAN to say...yeah ok!

DG, I had that discussion last week. The problem is finding a flywheel that works with the 5.5" clutch. Well...that and my aversion to reciprocating weight. But, if we can't get this thing whipped (and it may also be a contributor to the harmonics that have been beating on the oil pump drive system) than I'll look to a different clutch/flywheel solution.

A box of potential arrived today. Bo Christman at Bo-port.com sent the rehabbed head to me. Unfortunately I was too busy to pull it out of the box. I should get some pictures this week.

DD distractions have been cleared, all speed ahead.

Mike Shriver and I will be working to put the engine back together this weekend. We'll be yanking an extra transmission out of the totaled "Hoser" to put into service so that, hopefully, we can take it down for Knott's "Fabulous Fords Forever" weekend April 21st.

Lots to do in a month.

Oh, and I plan to take pictures.

                Here's the list:

                Assemble latest engine
Pull engine and transmission from "Hoser"
Mate Hoser transmission to assembled engine.
Stuff said assembly into BB Mustang
Wire up the engine. (Time willing, we'd like to clean-up the wiring)
                Install cooling system
                Install remote oil cooler plumbing
                Install intercooler & related plumbing
                R&R the fuel cell
Blow out and attach the fuel system.
                Start the beast
Determine whether or not to mount a rules legal dash
Address the obvious mistakes in Bob's wannabe Earl Scheib paint job.
Fix and paint the carnage on the back deck caused by the wing leaving town at 145mph
Attach all the bodywork, including front and rear aero
Obtain all the sponsors latest decals and get them installed.
Obtain "American Iron" windshield banner and install
Obtain last name decals that are required by rule and apply to the windshield.

                What else?

But we've begun the work to get it back on the road:

Setting up for the engine build, looking through the parts. Refurbished head from Bo-Port.com, my long time supporter Bo Christman, sitting there waiting to go.

Looks like the only gasket I don't have is for the oil pan. So I'll head over to the McParts store and pick up that and some paint for the engine block and cam cover. Bo had a couple of pieces he needs to send over to me, I hope they make it by Friday.

I've got a bunch of e85, so I think everything will get bathed and rinsed in that, then installed. Talk about a cleaning fluid, it cleans better than anything else I've used. The block still needs to take a "dawn" bath for the bores and galleries, then I'll spray it to keep it from rusting, prep for exterior paint and let it dry for a day before I start assembling. The short block assembly is pretty low tech. Basic replacement forged pistons, Crower Sportsman rods and stock crank. All the power is in the head and turbo.

God, I should have seen it coming. I'm so pissed.

Today was mockup day on the engine build. Mike and I spent hours making sure everything fit correctly. I had all the right pieces, all the clearances were working out. We spent two hours screwing around with the oil drive system, as its been the Achilles heel of the installation. Everything looked good. So we went ahead and started assembly. Got to the new oil pump, an m127 instead of the machine shop installed HV (which we specifically told them not to use, but they did anyhow) only to find out that they had modified the pickup and its now about 3/4" too short.

                            I'm soooooo pissed.

Pictures of most things once I'm no longer cross-eyed.

                                Raw material

Checking and rechecking that pesky dizzy gear/aux shaft problem area before installation (Thanks for all the help again, Mike)

Mike is of the opinion that the Cam Synchronizer's unbalanced rotor may be contributing to the issue. We discussed how to balance it, perhaps putting a small spot weld on the light side.
