Re: The story of Schtauffer's 67 Malibu

Went to a local tire, wheel, and muffler shop today to get a new set of lug nuts. You would think a place like that would have plenty of lug nuts on hand, and would be willing to order whatever you want. They looked at me like I had a third eye when I told them what I wanted. Whatever... 7/16 tapered bulge open nuts. Seriously.

Mounted the electric fan today. Now just gotta wire it. I hate wiring.

Many thanks to 65L79 for rescuing me on the wiring. The fan can be manually switched on, or it will automatically come on at 205. It will not run with the key off.

I would have had trouble with that... do not understand electricity, here.

Oh, and CPP is sending me a prop valve that they say will fix my soft brake pedal. Hope to post pics soon of the car outside on Weld Wheels. 8)

It lives again! I'm digging the street-strip vibe with these wheels and tires.

Thanks. Those are 275/60-15 on an 8" rim; there is a ton of additional clearance over the 275/40-18 on a 10" rim. Wonder if a 295/65-15 DR will fit. ;D Don't want to get 10" rims, better stick with the 275. :P

Acceptable. Not as good as I would like, but the car stops ok. The prop valve did make a difference. I'm thinking smaller diameter master like you suggested on the phone.

                  Current 1 1/8; you think 1 1/16?

Re: The story of Schtauffer's 67 Malibu

Car is down and out with unkown trans problems. No first or reverse, car will slowly start moving in the other gears but makes a bad smell. :P When we were pushing it around it will roll front ok, but when pushing it backwards it makes a weird noise and rolls with quite a bit of resistance.

It happened yesterday late afternoon at Goodguys Pocono. I made about a dozen runs through the autocross over the course of the day, and about 5:30 went on the track cruise. It turned about 5600 rpm in third down the front stretch; according to the GPS it went 121 mph. ;D After coming off the track and back onto pit road is when it happened. Rolling along at maybe 5-10 mph, it was like the brakes went on and it made a horrible vibration. Not much noise, just a really bad vibration and drag. I quick stopped and put it up in park and it went away, but then when I dropped it back in gear there was nothing in first or reverse and it will slowly start rolling in the other gears. Any ideas on what might be wrong inside there, based on that limited info? Indy? Oh yeah, its a 700R-4.

The trans is coming out and will be checked out; once the news comes back on how expensive it will be to rebuild the existing trans I will make a decision on whether to stick with the auto or cut a hole in the floor and hang a man-pedal.

For now I think I'll stick in a powerglide that I have so I can at least drive it. That won't cost me anything to stick that up in the trans tunnel.

Ok, so the plan is to drop the trans off at my transmission buddy tomorrow night. He'll open it up and find out what the deal is and we'll go from there. If its within the budget I might just have this thing back together in time for BSEF! Wish me luck! If the news is bad then I will put the powerglide in the car and begin saving for a good stick-box. :-\

I can come a day or two early if you need a hand installing the trans - whichever one.

Crappy cell phone pix of the teardown. The news is good. Just takes a 3-4 clutch pack, everything else looks brand new. My buddy thinks the governor might have been sticking, that's why it wouldn't want to shift into second occasionally. It had done this a time or three cruising around the infield between doing the 1st-gear only autocross and then hitting the track for a wide-open blast. He thinks holding it wide open in third gear for too long a time is what done it in. He thinks that had I gone up into overdrive it would have held together, but would not have prevented the inevitable. I'm just glad it broke when it did and not along a crazy PA 4-lane highway or up in Detroit this August or somewhere like that. The guys at the track were great, even ran out and got sandwiches for my wife and I!

I was pretty bummed Sunday about this deal. I feel better about it now. It will be just a few hundred dollars to get it back together, so it looks like I'll be making passes as BSEF after all. 8) He's going to put a different clutch pack in it for me that he thinks will hold up to the abuse a touch better.

Wish I could tell you what you're looking at here, but that's for the experts like Indy.

This is the toasted clutch pack. Again, crappy cell phone pic.
