Re: The Silver Buick's well Silver Buick!

I guess I'm slightly concerned about using electric rather then belt driven. Also, wouldn't oil put quite a strain on a pump made for water?... however, I wonder more at whether he was the guy who did the dry sump system? If so, I've seen one with that on it - and it is a work of art (bruce?) - but far more complex then what I'm envisioning....

do they make a Duckwilder (Duttweiler) oiling system for the BBB? It elminates the internal passages in the pump and instead uses external feed and pickup with the stock type spur gear pump. I custom fit a gerotor onto mine but I've not tested it yet.

Yeah, I'm quite interested in hearing how that gerotor pump works out for you. Dumb question I've never given thought to, but does the 3.8/4.1L use the same size crank snout as the 455? What size socket goes on the balancer bolt?

Re: The Silver Buick's well Silver Buick!

I like the simplicity of using the stock pickup and pan - plus not the added risk of having oil lines next to headers and the road. Perhaps the gerotor pump would be a good idea for mine as well. Thinking out loud, run a fitting off the front of the motor (where the oil pickup line exits) into a belt driven pump through filters and back into the motor on the opposite side.... would require some thought about what the front housing would look like.... hmmmm.... the the second problem about the weak bottom end - I'm still having a tough time justifying Buick power when too much power would eject the crank....

T/A, Poston, and others have refined this mod to a fare-thee-well. Having never built a big HP BBB I don't have specific info, but that's the lore, anyhow. Aren't you sorry you asked?

I seeem to remember an article many years back talking about the oil modification dan is talking about for both olds and buick blocks......I think I may still have the article in the closet....when I finish my homework for class I will look.....there was a 455 BPO shoot out about 2001 2002 one of the rags covered....the BBB won out over all....think its in there....

I'll get some measurements for you on Friday, crazy busy around the house till then. The timing covers are different designs though so its going to be custom oil pan or a lot of TIG welding on the timing cover if you stick with the stock pan. Another thing to consider is the location of the feed port on the face of the block, though it would be possible to externally feed the gerotor pump, and the return port, though again you can get around this like I did.
Another option would be to put a bulkhead fitting through the front wall of the block into the lifter valley then feed the rear of the oil gallery with a hardline.

what kind of volume does the pump need to have?

I'm 1,400 miles up in North Dakota. The radiator and timing cover are working like a champ, cruising hundreds of miles at a time at ~85mph it remains nice and cool.

Hell, just jump in and drive to Pheonix. If it makes it there, then drive to Quartzite. If it makes there, then screw it and drive all the way to LA. Bring your tools, satellite phone, and AAA card, just in case.

That's a good signature and avitar Joe :D

My mileage is way off from what I was expecting :-\ the problem is I'm not sure why. I drove the first 600 or so miles cruising at 70mph @ 2200rpm, pulling 14inHg of vacuum at on level road that speed. Climbing even the steepest hills in overdrive the vacuum doesn't go lower than 10inHg (gotta love torque ;D) and I got 17 mpg > So across Montana and North Dakota I bumped the speed up to 85mph @ 2600rpm, still was pulling between 14 and 12 inHg the whole time and still netted me 17 mpg :-\ It's still good mileage considering the engine, but my Centurion engine in this car was getting consistent 23mpg and pulling less vacuum. I'm measuring the distances with my GPS, I leave it on and am tracking the mileage with it. I know I haven't changed anything in the carb to suit the engine, but pulling that kind of vacuum and having that mileage just doesn't seem right to me, especially when I was driving 70mph. So my game plan is to see if the mileage significantly improves when I EFI it hopefully starting when I get back to Ely, and if it doesn't I'll re-cam it with the small cam from the Car Craft article DF and Chad did. Then see where I sit. From there I might re-gear the rear end down to what I was originally planning, 3.42's.
