    Why Kids Buy Japanese

Ok, i am ready for you all to destroy me after posting this. At first i wasnt even going to post, but i want your guys opinions too. Here it goes.

I dont understand why a teenager or younger person (like 18-30 years old) wouldnt buy a japanese "performance car." They are priced right, they last longer, they are lighter, they are fun to drive, you can option them the way you want to. And to top it off, there isnt a waiting list for a car that weighs 4100 lbs.

Let me explain. Take the Honda Civic Si Coupe for example. It starts at just $21,000 and has 197hp. I realize that a power rating like that doesnt get most of us (including me) around here excited, but the car only weighs 2900 lbs. You also get a 6-spd manual.

Compare that to the similarly priced V6 Mustang. For $20,000 you get 210hp with a 5-spd stick that weighs almost 3400 lbs.

The Subaru STi might start at almost 35k, but it delivers 305hp and only weighs 3300 lbs- and that's a station wagon. It also has all wheel drive and four doors (5, if you count the hatch).

Compare that to the new Camaro which weighs 3800lbs and has 400ish hp and you have a real interesting comparison.

I feel that these new american "muscle cars" are just boats that look cool. The only one i would actually buy is the Mustang GT. It has 300hp for 25k and weighs less that 3600 lbs. I still am not satisfied with that car though.

I guess im just really sad the Detroit missed an opportunity to sell a bunch of hot car to people in their early 20s and to the people who really wanted them.

It looks like most of them will go to middle age men who wanted a camaro or challenger as a kid and now can afford the new one. But their just gonna drive it to and from work and keep it bone stock. Where's the carjunkie spirit in that?

Japan makes hi po cars for kids and "hot rodders." These kids modify the crap out of these cars. Detroit makes hi po cars for middle age men who cruise around in them.

I realize that some of these cars will actually make it too the drag strip, but if i could to the same thing in a japanese car for 2/3s the price, why the hell would i buy a camaro. just to look cool? i mean it's nice and all, but not worth over 30k to me.

Well, there it is. Im sure im going to get murdered for this, but someone had to say it. I cant blame any kid for buying a jap hot rod after this BS.

I'll be the first to post and agree with you. You are 100% correct.

Fortunately some younger people have taste, so they won't buy those cars.

(but they aren't likely to be able to afford a new American musclecar either)

On technicalities you have it mostly right. Civic Si's are about 30k out the door now. America does not produce a reasonably priced sports car anymore. Much of the 18 to whatever crowd also doesn't identify with American cars new or old. Let me ask you this though if someone handed you 35k and told you to run 10's with a BRAND NEW CAR what manufacturer's would you actually be able to do it with ?

10's with a BRAND NEW car, and 35k? How many times do I have to run a 10?

3 times optimum condititions ( tires, temp, track, alt, etc). I'll even stoop and say mid 11's.

Yeah. I mean staying alive though. A big enough vortech, or turbo, decent slugs, gears, slicks, strong clutch all together do able @ or under 35k. Show me how much a 2008 Civic Si would cost to do that..

I don't know if you could do all that on top of the ~$26k that you're going to pay for a base GT.

I think it could be done if you are resourceful. I think you would be cutting it close or going over BUT how much would it cost to do it to a 2008 Honda Civic Si... or any import for that matter. I say ALOT more.

I'll stay out of the 11-second new car deal. Or maybe not.

I guess the "foreign cars" can be appealing to the younger crowd, but why not a Chevy Cobalt.  Specifically a supercharged SS Cobalt.  I think they are 240 or 260 horsepower right off the lot, almost right at 3000 pounds and run a 14 second at 100mph quarter mile bone stock.  MSRP $22,000.  You should be able to pick one up under $20,000.  Add a 200 shot to that supercharged Echotech and spank the acne face boys at the track.  8)  And the Echotech should be able to handle a 200 shot with no trouble at all, IMO.  ;D

I just realized something. You know when they say we live in the golden age of horsepower right now? Yeah we are. Except it now has a humongous price tag and comes in a mostly single dimensional no character boring package... And with the the PS3, anime, Honda super tuner, G4 TV watcher, pseudo post puberty car buyers.. the demand for BAD ASS cars ( in our eyes ) is pretty low.

                          Re: Why Kids Buy Japanese

I think the biggest reason the younger crowd started flocking to the "ricers" has nothing to do with the cars themselves at all, but economics.... namely INSURANCE!

Price out insurance for a 16-25 year old on a mustag, camaro, challenger, charger, corvette, etc.... totally insane, up until a few years ago - before the insurance companies caught on - it was cheap to insure a youngster on a civic/accord/cobalt/focus/cavalier/etc....

Also remember that Detroit let down the parents of these kids with the shabby quality vehicles we produced in the 70's and 80's, these kids remember what cars the folks drove and buy accordingly -- if the folks had a bad taste about the quality of the big 3 vehicles they had - the kids will too. In many ways, we've done this to ourselves. Thankfully our quality has come a long long way and by the '90's our stuff was comparable, and now we are better in a lot of cases -- so hopefuly the next generation won't be so anti big 3...... hopefully.
There's always something new to learn.

I like cars... which have been modified to increase performance.

Don't personally have an interest in much new... that's just stroking a check... tell me what you've done....

I agree with you 100% man, cant even get a decent used car for a reasonable price and many kids dont have the space or time to build what many of us view as the right kind of car....
