    Neutral Safety Switch?

I have a 2003 Mustang with an automatic transmission and yesterday while driving the cruise control would not switch off with pressure applied to the brake. It had to be shut manually. Now, The car starts just fine but when I am in park I have to press the brake interminably hard to get it to shift out of park.

Could the neutral safety switch be the cause of both problems?

And what would the expected repair cost be?

    Thanks in advance.

sounds more like the brake switch (stop light switch) which indicates to the cruise you hit the brakes (off) and to the solenoid for the shifter that you have the brake on (out of park)

that's for a 90 model but I doubt they changed much.

Any idea what the repair cost of that would be?

I no longer have a good mechanic (he retired) and I am anxious about being taken, so, I'd like to get an idea of potential repair costs.

I think you're right. I just had a co-worker look and I have no brake lights and I have to place the ignition to the ON position to shift.

I'm pretty unsure on the cost, I haven't had a car in the shop for 20 years ...

Spidergearsman might have a guestimate on the cost. Make sure it's plugged in, that's easy enough. Check the fuse too, no fuse=no circuit. I'd check the fuse first.

It sounds like the cruise control release switch may be tango union .... rockauto lists them at $35 - $45. On the other hand, since it gets its signal from the brake light switch, I'd start there and work through all of them. Someone with more experience with Furds may know of a more common problem as well.

Thanks, guys. This helped a bunch.

I am going to make it to the shop, hopefully tomorrow. I work all day today.

Common problem, the Motorcraft switch fits 96-04 Mustang. The other switches say 01-04 Mustang..

You guys called it. It was the brake safety switch and the wire leading to it. The wire was fired too!

All fixed now and for less than $100. I'm a happy guy!
