Re: Rebeldryver's '65 Impala SS Black Betty

Anybody have any diagrams, or repair manuals for rebuilding the A833OD trans that I have in this car? I'm thinking of doing myself and I have found the parts. But, I need to know to take one apart and, more importantly, put it back together.

I was gonna say.....taking it apart is
the easy part........that going back together
      can be a real bitch

      Good luck

finding a video of the rebuild would be great, if not, finding a book and a friend that's done one or several would be excellent.

If nothing else - have mechanics wire handy and thread onto the wire each piece in order as you take it off.... of course taking video / pictures during the "tearing apart" phase never hurts!

Thanks for the info. I also found this great info on Autozone's website.

Re: Rebeldryver's '65 Impala SS Black Betty

The same 65 Impala convertible I got a bunch of other parts from, gave up this rear bumper to me. I got it for $100 complete. Mainly, I wanted it for it's super clean center section, these are three piece bumpers.

I had to partially disasemble the bumper in order to get it in the trunk of the Caprice for the drive home. It's not perfect. A couple dings and some pitting, but it's center section is much better than my old one.

First thing was to remove the old one. I hosed down the bolts with PB Blaster a week ago, but there isn't much rust back there.

Look what fell out when the bumper came loose. The rock hit me in the chest. Could explain the periodic rattle coming from back there. The gas cap is one I lost years ago. Looks like I have a spare now.

Here's a close up view of my bumper's center section. You can see the bad pitting and rust.

Compare the new and old center sections. The plan is to build a nice bumper from all these parts. Reassemble the other bumper and sell it.

This big heavy bracket appears to just hold the license plate light, but upon further looking I figure it also strengthens the center part of the bumper. I had to drill out two 3/8th in. rivets to get it off to paint it.

I reassembled the two bumpers. I now have two complete bumpers including brackets, license plate light, bracket and license plate bracket. I ran out of light and will post pics tomorrow of the two assembled. Hopefully, I'll get it back on the car before work tomorrow.

some of the folks on here wouldn't have to worry about taking that bracket off - rust would have solve the problem :D

Scott, do you have enough info to rebuild the trans? I didn't see your request for info earlier...pm me if you want me to scan the factory 1981 chevy truck manual section about the trans.

                      The bumper all back together.

Compare to the other bumper. Much better.

It went on the car very easily. Reusing my original brackets helped that.

All polished up. A definite improvement. Matches the condition of the front bumper. Good driver condition.

You can get by without a special tool - I seem to recall I used a large nut and bolt and a couple of sockets when I was working on the my Dart trans (non OD A833). It was a bit fiddly but worked.
