Love the Caprice, my Dad stills owns a '70 Impala Custom be bought in '70, 67K miles later. It's pretty much the same as yours on the outside except for a black vinyl top and full wheel covers. It's a little bit of a dog with a 2 bbl 350, but still a fun cruiser.

Thursday, I got out the wrenches and started tearing apart the Impy's 383 for it's new heads and roller cam. I only wish it would back together as fast.

Does tearing apart a perfectly good running engine make me a car junkie, or just nuts? My family thinks I am nuts. What do they know. They all drive Hondas and Minivans.

Definately Car Junkie! Everyone thought I was nuts for pulling a perfectly good engine out of a perfectly good running car to put it in another car simply because I wanted too. It was all worth it ;D Cool pictures, I can smell the sweet smell of used motor oil ;D

But it wasn't perfect. Just by looking at the pictures I can see it needs heads and a cam.

Thanks. The goal is to have it running and driving by Feb 16th for the CarJunkie BBQ. Now only if Dave would get a chassis dyno that day....Wish me luck.

Yep, the Edelbrock Victor Jr's. Should be nice and pretty. Looks like it's gonna be nice this week on my days off so I will under hood all three days assuming my cam shows up in time.


Does any one know what kind of clay or putty that is used for checking valve/piston clearance?

I just went to the toy store and got regular modeling clay. I sprayed the combustion chamber and piston crown with Pam so the clay wouldn't stick, and everything came out OK. Of course, that was on Performers, so I don't know w/Victors.

I still have the combustion chamber shaped hunk of clay around here somewhere (from the 'Stang).

I've used a ball of aliminum foil. I don't always have clay around.

Yes, this way works. Some may say there are specific clays to use for the piston to valve clearance, but this has worked well.

modeling clay or silly putty will work as long as its all removed, so it doesn't become carbon.
