its just a daily driver Jeep... if you dont want a chance of leaks, run a manual box
yep, I could do a lot of things.

All the Hybrids have Electric power steering / Electric assist power steering...

But they all have battery packs in them.. You also have to pick what type of electric motor you want to use...as in A/C -- D/C Permanent magnet or induction...and if you go the permanent magnet route you will have to be careful about the wheels getting turned real quick...like if you hit a curb at an angle which make the steering wheel freewheel on its own---because ford is having a problem with their hybrid escape D/C permanent magnet electric power steering, when the wheels get hit and make them move real quick like I described..it is burning out the electric power steering control module..

      You get why

        good info, thanks!

as with all good hot rods, mine comes with instructions - I guess if I go with the electric assist I'll have to add a section to the instructions

Power consumption attributable to a P/S pump when going straight is negligable. I had occasion to test this at Drag Week 11 TnT day the Sunday before the event started. On the first pass I went [email protected]. It tossed the belt at the 1000 mark on that run. I cut it off as it was partially shredded and made another lap 50 minutes later with virtually identical DA and ran [email protected].

Pump is a Saginaw Type II providing pressure to a Saginaw variable rate 800 style steering box which factory on a 71 Mustang. The pump isn't factory. On center there is no pressure as there is no assist in the box and therefore negligable power loss.

Mercedes' have a very nice electric pump which can be used to provide fluid pressure for both power brakes and power steering which is handy for engines with big cams that pull little vacuum at idel and low speed throttle openings. I looked carefully at that setup before deciding to go with manual brakes and keep the power steering. Pump is cast Iron including the accumulator ball and wieghs 20#.

You can modify a Jeep PS box to fit a Corvette - thus giving you the Saginaw style PS. C3 Corvettes use the always-leaking power assist.... one of the attractors to electric is the removal of a leak (or several leaks).

not to mention, it drags an old school car into the 21st century with power assist, electric rack and pinion.

all while weighing less than 3000 lbs (yeah, Z06 territory).... which is kind of the over-arching point of this build

But still, it's good idea CDM - just not for this car.
