New Fusion is "rear steer" electric power steering, new explorer is as well. Most likely junkyard source is the previous model escape which I believe went to EPAS in 2009 or 2010 - all of the above are "rear steer".
Like Brian's motocraft oil filter - we will not make fun of your ford EPAS set up in your corvette - we promise.

liar
the next step is figuring out how to control it....

Just FYI that picture shows a completely different set up than what's on the modern Fords - there's a sizeable motor on the passenger side - about the side of a starter that provides the "power" for the power steering. I don't think it would be easy to package in anything RWD.

I dunno - I like the idea of not having the pump, and I like the idea of electric - but I read that those things pull up to 80 amps.... so that would be yet another problem. The upside, though, would be you'd never lose steering assist or power brakes (I'm running a vacuum pump with canister) if the motor dies.
However, if it were easy - everyone would be doing it.
I've never figured out why the aftermarket doesn't offer a good electric powered power steering pump. Nor why no one has put together a good list of junk yard sources. Some Fieros and Porsches are the only sources I have been able to figure out over the years.
Regarding all electric power steering, I have seen two types. Column mounted motor and rack mounted motor.

Our 2008 Mazda 3 has an electric power steering pump, about the size of a 3lb coffee can.
I THINK it uses a PWM type motor because it only runs ,that I can hear, when the steering is turned. It may be running or in a by-pass type mode or low or no pressure then ramp up when the wheel is turned.
It also feels like it is progreessive because the wheel does get "wieghty" at higer speeds.
The rack looks like a normal power rack, and it is rear steer.

I like the idea of being different but if you have to spin the alt harder(or just have
a BIG alt) vs a pump I cant really see the difference... if your not turning the wheels
the pump is by-passing..... the elec style is sorta based on a accumulator so it builds
a high head pressure (reserve before turning on the pump)..... both of them will see
a hard resistance if the motor or belt blow) so to me its a 50/50.... if your looking for
a few extra ponies on a drag strip... remove the belt during the run....(myself I wouldnt
even waste the time to remove it...... but now if you can come up with a lite weight one
that doesnt draw some decent power I'd look into it myself.... one of the labs that I worked
in, we came up with a rapid heat system using the power steering pump to draw temp off
of the oil.... it heats up quick.... the system worked ok but was too pricey to produce back
then.. we did have a elec rapid heat system that I put on my own personal car and it worked
well but it had to really work the alt... I sold that car with it still on it and told the new owner
about the system(he never had a problem other than he changed a alt that wore out)
I think the EV guys may be a good source of info. I haven't looked at my Escape but I'm pretty sure it is electric rack like the Mazda 3 above. If you need, I can get you some pics of it.

my reason is I don't want to put another pump on my car. I hate hydraulics because they eventually leak
Yes they MIGHT leak ... but damn ... I've got over 200K on my PS and its still dry...
its just a daily driver Jeep... if you dont want a chance of leaks, run a manual box
