Thanks Andy, good information. We're taking one of the scenic routes (74 or 64) from Cleveland to Charlotte and running the interstate 40 west bound coming home. This is some of the prettiest scenery in the eastern US.

Your welcome. There are some great roads in the foothills of SC and NC but to take them is a lot more time consuming concedering we most be in Charlotte by 6PM. Hwy 11 is a nice ride also but then 2 hrs of interstate 85 to Charlotte.Originally posted by smalblock View PostThanks Andy, good information. I love the Camaro in the avatar I hope to meet up with you. I want to see it in person. My mom had a 67-68 when I was little. They were dad's company cars. Ned Jarret Nascar end up with the 67 one. My brother got the 68 and then sold it.

Thanks, hope to meet you also. Are you long hauling? We come to the Smokies several times a year. We're planning on leaving Cleveland TN around 8 AM and running US 74 to I-40, no matter which route the Power Tour takes. Barring no problems, I think we will get to Concord in plenty of time. We did US-64 last summer and thought the scenery was lots better than Tail of the Dragon. Once we get to Asheville, we will take the quickest route to Concord. What are you driving? We'll be looking for you.

I am hoping they run highway 11, it is a great drive and 55 mph most of the way. It will be a run up 85 for a while (I will try to keep up with the custom wagon), geting off 85 before the congestion (485) happens will be the key to not sitting in traffic.
73 at I-77 is a cluster. Non map quest routes are the key to getting in with a minimum of traffic. As is it gets closer, I will see what part of 85 and 485 is still under construction, check the PT route, and share some alternatives. It really depends on the route on which way I would get to the track.Comment

what about coming thru the tail of the dragon and down?Originally posted by Andy4639 View PostThe routes you take will have to be decided on from where you are coming from. If you come in the interstate from Ashville on 40 just hit 77south and get off at the Hwy 73 Huntersville exit and go into Concord then south on 49 straight to the track. This is mostley 4lanes interstate driving though.
Ashville NC
139 mi, 2 hours 32 mins In current traffic: 2 hours 39 mins

I-26 E, US-74 E and I-85N 134 mi, 2 hours 10 mins

US-74Alt E 139 mi, 3 hours 33 mins
Chattanooga,
328 mi, 5 hours 39 mins In current traffic: 5 hours 39 mins US-74 E
331 mi, 6 hours 26 mins US-64 E
The last route will be the least interstate driving and some very nice scenery. There are some great little towns on this route. This is my area where I live.
Bridal Veil Falls

Yes I plan to be in Texas on the last day of May. I will be in my 1971 Chevy truck. 71 custom TPI.
I hope to be bringing about 30 67-72 trucks in tow with me also all of these years along with a few suburbans.
I'm looking forward to the driving.
Here is a link for the C-10 club.
Hwy 11 is a nice ride and some good spots along the wayto take pictures. I took this one a few weeks ago on the way to cliffside NC on hwy 11.

The only thing wrong with hwy 11 is there is no good way around Charlotte other than straight through I-85 to Concord. I would think going through maybe Lincolnton would be a better route but there again you have to get to the track and Huntervilles the only good way on Hwy 73.
It really depends on what time of day we hit Charlotte.
The Tiger tail is a long strech of 2 lane road that is fun to drive but not when you have 3-4 hrs of driving before and afterwards.
I grew up in Charlotte and lived in Denver of the East until 1982 so I know both area's pretty good. Yes there are some good side routes you can take and make good time + see some nice scenery but you better know where you are. Coming down out of Gatlinburgh through the parkway is a drive you will never forget but the traffic may be to much and speed limit is 45MPH and I have been told they are cracking down on it pretty good now.

spoke a guy from the four states museum. he says they will have the museum open till 10 pm or so and they will be doing registration at the power tour stop. so that one is easy. the museum in tupelo wont extend the hours but they are between memphis and birminghamComment
