    DragWeek 2012 - My Adventure

Will it ever be truly drama free?!?

    Hello All,

I left Wed pretty much on schedule..only one hour later than my 1:00 plan. Everything was loaded failry organized and my bed was ready in the back seat of the truck. Driving all that time alone with no one to talk to I began noticing things I might not have, had I been distracted in conversation. 1. There are a lot of big rigs with "Express" in their business name. It would appear that word puts them all in a big hurr. 2. I really need to remember earlier to load stuff on my Iphone to listen to through the radio much earlier than 5 minutes before I'm leaving so that when I get frustrated I have time to mess with it and not just give up. 3. There are a butt load of country and Christian stations on AM and FM that you can get out in the boonies but Rock? not so much - See #2

I made decent progress with no issues for about 12 hours, until IT happened. I was getting tired and even though I still had half a tank of gas, I stopped at a Flying J around 2:30 a.m. I got the gas pumping and then started my walk around to check the trailer out. I was shocked awake by this:

Sure call me lame but I didn't hear anything or feel a noticeable difference in the way the trailer was acting. I finished pumping the gas and pulled the trailer around to a lit area of the gas station where I wouldn't be in the way and went about swapping the tire out with the spare.

I gotta say the Trailer Aid ramp deal is the bomb. You'll see more of why later but it was super easy to use and it didn't slide at all when I pulled up onto it, not even on this slick concrete.

So I get the spare on there with no problems but when I set it down on the ground I felt my heart sink a little (more). The spare was pretty close to being flat. (children always check your spares before you leave) Thank goodness I was at the gas station when I swapped the tire. I drove over to the air machine, pumped in a handful of quarters, and commenced to add some air. It was slow going but I eventually got to 40pounds. I then checked out the others and they were fine. Now pretty well awake witha full tank of gas, I thit the road again. I came to a rest stop an hour later and decided to stop for a rest in the back.

The rest lasted for about 90 minutes and I was back up and hit the road again. A while later I was going through Gallup NM and let CDMBill and Swede know where I was. I was talking to Bill and I found they were only about an hour behind me so we planned to meet in Albuquerque to cruise the rest of the trip together. We talked and decided I would go ahead to Alb and look for a new tire to replace the bad one and hopefully I'd be done by the time they reached me. I found a chain called Peerless Tires and the guy switched out my tire and put it back on the spare tire rack. I headed back to the meeting spot and when Bill and Floyd showed up we had lunch at Denny's and then got back on the road.

We were making decent progress with no issues untl IT happened...queue enemy music...again. No I didn't just repeat myself by mistake:

This time it was on the passenger side. It's hard to tell but that shoulder is kinda rolled/ angled down. Once again the Trailer Aid did its job with no hassle and got the trailer (with car still loaded) off the ground. Once I dug the tire's remains out of the brake mechanism, I quickly swapped in the new one I'd just bought a few hours before and got it back on the road. Bill was about empty so we went in search of fuel.
Our target for the night became Amarillo where we would meet Mike (Swede). We checked into the hotel he found us, had a good dinner at the place he found, and I found another Peerless tire place on the list he got me of local tire places. I replaced the 3 remaining tires for a matched set. At some point, I don't remember when, I realized that those tires were 7-8 years old. Even though they looked great with killer tread left, they were not up to the task anymore.

The next day I went and got the new tires, Bill had his trailer tires checked out, and we hit the road again. We went thru some thunder storms and for awhile had a wall fo constant lightning to our left. It was pretty wild seeing all that lighting and the cloud formations.

    See Wall of Lighting here

We eventually made it to the hotels in Tulsa around 5 pm and holy cow was it windy. Roof shingles were being ripped off the hotel at a constant rate. After being warned by Jason with the killer tribal flamed coupe, I moved my truck and trailer to get away from the falling debris. I wound up moving it all the way in to the shelter of the complex. We had dinner at an Italian place close by and then it was back to the room. But..the power was still out at the hotel so I hung out with Jason for awhile with some refreshments that still retained some of their colder properties and just talked cars.

This morngin I got up and cleaned the car while talking to a couple of Australians who came to join in/ watch the event. Their 66 Impala didn't make it out from LA due to overheating problems so they rented a big SUV and are just gonna hang out for most of the week. After Lunch at Charlie's Chicken, Jason and I walked back to the hotel and the parking lot was already showing signs of arrivals.

As the days go by I will try to take lots of pictures and post them. My copilot is now gonna be my friend Chad and he will be taking pix as well so we'll have more.

There are already some new cars here and they are bad ass!

Here's a shot of what the parking lot looked like at about 5 pm Sat.

I bet the Peerless tire you stopped at was less than half a mile from my house. Drag Week drama right in my own backyard. haha

Rich, thanks for the update on your trip. I read the last Drag Week journal you wrote as well as MoparBilly's. You guys do a great job of telling the story from the ground floor for the rest of us wish-I-coulds. Thanks.

I think the Trailer-Aid guys should pitch a set of trailer tires to you for the double-blatant-plug! I have a 4 ton bottle jack in my trailer box, may get one of these (and a spare.) I just recently figured out.. idiot, I don't have 5x5 wheels, the truck spare won't work. Doh.

Hey guys, glad you're enjoying my pain. You should keep getting some enjoyment if that is the case. Here we go on Sunday.

This will be fairly short but I will include some pix of a few cars I captured in the little bit I was able to get around. This hopefully is the last of the 'issues'. I got to the track just before 8 with my truck and trailer still fully loaded. The registration line was already fairly long. Funny since I thought the gates didn't open til 8. I guess I need to just accept this as part of the deal or get up even earlier.

I unloaded the car from the trailer, detached the big trailer from the truck, and got some help unloading the little trailer from the bed of the truck. I jumped over to the registration/ technical inspection line as quickly as I could but it was for naught...I was there for a total of about 5 hours.

I was able to get a bit of video of the walking back from my truck to grab a BS hat from the truck for combating sunburn and a few waters to help with the heat. I'll try to post them ASAP.

So I make it through the tech line and had to (embarrassed) be pushed aside like a Tonka toy because my batteries were dead. I started trying to fix the issue by charging with my little charger and generator on the trailer. Uh but the generator was back at the truck. Not wanting to carry that and the charger, I disconnected my little trailer from the car and rolled it like a cart since it has a wheel on the tongue. I got funny looks but I wasn't carrying anything so screw it. Here is my picture of shame after I made it all the way back to the car and was charging my battery.

It seemed that my charger wasn't doing much so I went and borrowed Steve's (ProCharged509) agm capable charger. It seemed to be making progress but they were dead dead. Eventually my generator ran out of gas. Well just add more gas Rich, you say? Sure...except I forgot the little gas can with premixed two cycle oil/gas at home 1700 MILES AWAY! crap.

So I'm walking again. I eventually ran across Swede and he offered to tow me over to some RV spots that had power so I could charge with more umph. So there I sat for hours while I charged a battery. I wound up disconnecting the second one earlier figuring it would be easier to just charge one at a time. I have since decided that it will go back together like that tomorrow morning. Just one battery connected at a time and the other will be backup. Should be better on the alternator as well. I missed my chance to make any test runs so that was a wash. I pulled the batteries out and put them in the truck. On the way back to the hotel I picked up a new charger of my own like Steve's and along with his, put both batteries on the chargers in the room. By the time we got back from dinner they were both at 100. We should be good to go for tomorrow.

Overall it was an enjoyable day talking with many folks from BS and otherwise as they wandered by the lines.

In other news there were a couple of cars that I know of that unfortunately will not be joining us after the test n tune runs of the day. I was told that the really cool rat rod style car with matching trailer is out with a broken axle. The other surprise and bad one is the really nice orange Camaro. It sounds like it launched hard to the right and it carried him right into the wall. This is one of the unlimited cars as indicated by the A next to his number on the windshield so they are running some serious power. It is a real shame as the car was fresh from what I understand and a really killer build.

Now some more pix of some cars and trucks I found interesting. There are many more in the video's. I'm trying to upload right now but they are taking a long time and I need to sleep so I will leave it running and try to post the links in the morning before we leave.

First is the Triumph TR6 with tube chassis and turbo'd motor. I heard someone saying it ran in the 8's or maybe even 7's. He mentioned his best 60' was 1.28...WOW!

Then there is the Fairmont wagon with turbo and cool farm truck style blown Ford. Finally that ridiculously cool Datsun Z with equally cool trailer. Enjoy, cya tomorrow.

I wish I would have caught this earlier, those batteries probably need to charge longer if they really were dead despite what the charger said. If you have any more trouble with them tommorow let me know. I manage an Interstate Batteries distributorship and the warehouse is only two miles away from the track. You can find me in the blue 68 Barracuda.

I left them on for awhile longer after we got back but I'll keep that in mind and keep an eye on it. I now know that I have enough room for a full size battery in there if I remove the two small ones. I would just have to figure out how to tie it down securely.

I'll be the confused looking used to be red headed dude who's got watery eyes from all of the hardware around. My standard answer will be "damn, (insert track name) dirt in the eye again"... neck is already hurting from gooing "oooh look" and ever time something fired when I was rolling through there yesterday it gave me whiplash. haha. Yesterday we looked kinda tarded in our matching Bangshift! shirts.. Monica seems to think she can only wear it once. I'll get the Hotel guys to clean it for her today.

See y'all in a bit. I noticed it got pretty quiet in here, must be a bunch of guys put their game faces on!

Good to finally be meeting my fellow BS lunatics - We've made it to Ennis sun burnt and tired, but without incident... last night's alternator fire was plenty for us for the week. I got a call from Shawn Anderson en route today - and it sounds like his freshly rebuilt transmission had already failed him.... major bummer.
