well, that depends... how hot is it in Iowa?
No A/C in my junk...
TC, I think I'll take you up on the stop in Phoenix offer. Not sure which day yet though.
Any tips on a route from Phoenix to CO Springs?
My preference is to stay off interstates, but not too far from civilization just in case i need to spring for a new radiator or somethin'...Yes, I'm a CarJunkie... How many times would YOU rebuild the same engine before getting a crate motor?

Anyone up for a steak in either Wichita or Kansas City?
Probably around Day 3 or 4 on the road.
And is there anything BangShift-worthy must-see in that area?Yes, I'm a CarJunkie... How many times would YOU rebuild the same engine before getting a crate motor?

I40 to I25 out of Albuquerque is the way to go, I once tried cutting up to the bottom of Colorado using the 491 out of Gallup to the 160 that runs across Colorado and that was just plain hairball!!!!!, crazy mountain roads.....Originally posted by Caveman Tony View Postwell, that depends... how hot is it in Iowa?

The RED Ball Express, 2012 - What tools would you bring?
So what tools would you guys bring?
Nearly 3000 miles in a 40 year old truck, new motor, new clutch, etc..
I'm thinkin' the basics:
- wrenches
- pliers + needlenose
- visegrips
- hammer
- multibit screwdriver
- tire gauge
- sockets, etc
- baling wire, safety wire, duct-tape
- few doodads for wiring fixes, fuses, crimper, etc
Any GM-Specific tools I'm forgetting?
plus fluids: oil, antifreeze, maybe a bottle of gear oil
a jerry can of gas, and a jerry can of water
tire patch kit?
What else?
**edit - also a FIRE extinguisher**Last edited by Caveman Tony; August 17, 2012, 04:32 AM.Yes, I'm a CarJunkie... How many times would YOU rebuild the same engine before getting a crate motor?

That sounds like a great route.Originally posted by BOOOGHAR View Posttake 87 out of phoenix into payson to showlow then north into holbrook and catch I-40 to Albuequerque
Scenic, near the Tonto Nat'l Forest.. what's the elevation through there?
HPA, I haven't nailed down a route plan yet, but was considering rolling through Eastern PA, but avoiding Philly traffic.
I am NOT driving through Jersey. Again. Ever. Unless someone pays me.Yes, I'm a CarJunkie... How many times would YOU rebuild the same engine before getting a crate motor?

If my bonzai across half the States in an untested car taught me anything, it was be ready for a freeze plug to exit stage left at 75mph, LOL!Originally posted by Caveman Tony View PostSo what tools would you guys bring?

That list is pretty comprehensive. Maybe add an electric tire pump and make sure the truck has a power point or modify the pump to hook to the battery. With that make sure a working jack and tire iron that fits the lugnuts. Perhaps one alternator/water pump belt if the one on the truck looks suspect.Last edited by TheSilverBuick; August 18, 2012, 08:17 AM.Escaped on a technicality.Comment
