What are some unspoken auto prejudices you have?

I have always been a brand loyal guy. Ford in a Ford. Foreign in a foreign. After the invention of independant susp., no goin back to solid axles... Lately, the money issue, gas crisis, and all the time away from my friends and family has got me rethinking my hot rod ideas and predispostions.

I was raised a Ford guy, but over the years my taste has evolved into that which produces the most power and breaks the most barriers. Screw the A/c! I want power! My mantra has definetely seen changes. As little as 2 years ago, I sought tones of power, the right stance with all the latest parts, and pure cross country comfort. Always wanted a car that would do anything I wanted to do with it.

Nowadays, gettin' down to what will scratch the itch in it's most basic form is what I seek. Just want a reliable, fast, cheap hot rod that is simple yet efficient in a bare bones, who cares what you think kind of way. Pretty much gone are the days of chasing after what will be acceptable and impressive to the powers that be. I believe I have finally attained the mentality that seeks to build what I want to build and says "Well that's your opinion and you are entitled to it, now if you will excuse me.. I have two loooong black marks to leave..."

I am not looking to be the angry rebel here. Just gettin sick of chasing the wind. Gone are the days of going with what will look right to some magazine reader or internet guru I have never even met. Violation... who cares... build what you want. ( I play the violation game too.. everybody has standards, right?)

Build what you like, but do a solid job of it. That is my "right way" now. To give you a little visual imagery of what I am seeing in my head, picture an '89 F150 shortbed.. straight axle with coilovers, climate controls removed along with second gas tank, chrome manual stick poking outa the floor, worn out paint with primer blotches (character), set of vintage 15 in. big and littles, and a (gulp.. here is the one that hits me the hardest, too) EFI LSX motor with a procharger. Lots of simple systems that make power and reliability.

That is some weird stuff to put together and no.. I have not been smoking anything. I just have all this kinda stuff sittin' around me. The opportunity to put all this stuff on the "right" cars never seems to come. Who knows if anything will come of all this ramblin' on, but there just comes a time when ya gotta go for it. Maybe that time will soon come. It is definetely getting closer....

Go for it, if it makes you happy do it.

Interesting setup, for sure. I gotta agree with the idea behind the build. I've posted my idea for the all-money Pro-Touring '78 LeBaron somewhere else, but the Diplomat for now is what I've got: bulletproof LA 360, four gears, wide 15" steel rims on decent rubber all the way around, handles well, hauls ass (five comfortably! LOL) and looks ok with a cheap solid-color paintjob. In all honestly, I think Dave and Chad would puke when they first saw it, seeing the condition it's in right now, but I bet it would get a ball or two rolling in someone's head.

Do what is good for you.

I'm prejudiced against '89 Ford trucks with straight axles and LSX engines

Actually, I like the idea, quit typing and go build it!

Sounds cool. If you like it, then go for it.

So what are some of your own rules that you have always upheld? No front wheel drives? Trucks are for work only? Anyone?

I never fallowed any rule simply because if you did then you would not build the stuff that you would like to try. Thinking out of the box makes tthis a uniquie hobby and life style that much more fun.

Can't think of anything really except I don't know how I feel about import engines in muscle cars.

Cars should have internal combustion engines.

I'm thinking hard about that one.
