Another talking out my ass moment: Upping my protein intake every day appears to be working. I have more energy the whole day instead of hitting a wall and being exhausted towards the end. I'm noticing a difference if I have a Power Bar or something else high in protein right after a workout too. I bounce back much quicker and it seems like I'm adding more weights to the machines quicker too.

    Thanks for the tip guys!

Edit: I've been consistently up about 2 pounds in body weight since monkeying with the diet, but still losing body fat at about the same rate, if not a little faster. Seems a fair trade to me.

And my taste for fruit is back, todays meal is avacado, white nectaine, banana and an apple. During the winter you'd have to put a gun to my head to eat avacado, i wonder why.
Sweet! Good to hear it oj! You can have all of my avacados, I never developed a taste for the things.

I tweeaked the lower last Saturday at the gym but nothing too bad. Just giving me a little limp. the upside is I now know what I can do as far as free weights and most importantly when to STOP!

Yesterday when putting on my pants I had a mid back spasm and its been giving me hell but it did not affect my back and bi workout at lunch yesterday. Some advil and have my little one walk on it for a day or so will work out that knot.

its hard not to just go ape shit crazy in the weight room, I love it. I love lifing big heavy weights, I love the feeling, the high...so sometimes I get a little out of hand and have to reel myself back in to reality lol!

Yup. I'm finally getting to the point where I'm reaching muscle failure before my joints start telling me to stop. The endorphin rushes have started to kick in again, I'd forgotten how awesome that is. Been itching to just go balls out and this is not helping!

its an additction just like anything else. If it doesnt involve my back I iwll destroy my chest tri's and bi's...I have to take it easy on shoulder and back exercises. I do a lot of seated exercises that help take the strain off the back and really isolate the muscle group. It is not ideal for an overall workout but it keeps me off pain pills and in the gym.

It is probably just me but when i do a lot of protien i get as mean as a snake, i really have to control myself as i can go into a blind rage. Serious. It took a while to figure out my moods but it seems like if i drink one of the 42gr protien shots on my way to the gym, another after working out and one of those 9gr peanutty protien thing candy bars for beakfast and do that for a couple days i could stomp on a baby panda. well, maybe not, but you get the drift.
Any of you guys have similar concerns?
Gotta love an avacado, i'm originally from Maine and ate hazelnuts from the other side of the bush from the black bears and avacados taste almost as good as hazelnuts - no bears either.

Best Protein drink I've ever had...Bolthouse Farms... http://bolthouse.com/our-products/be...ocolate/detail

Loaded with Whey and Soy protein.... I have one every morning....as a gastric bypass patient we have to consume lots of protein to keep muscle mass and burn only fat.....I've lost over 120 lbs since November and this drink is one of the reasons why....showed it to my nutritionist....she is now drinking them and they are on new patients plans.

I haven't seen Chassisman's drink around here so I haven't tried it but I've had good luck with Carnation Instant Breakfast. Pretty good protein content and they have sugar free for us diabetics. One of these is my breakfast every morning and it gets me to lunch w/o low blood sugar. Except at Bonneville, where I'll have a second breakfast but I go lightly. They get me up and moving quite a bit earlier than usual.

Like most other races, it's as hard as you push yourself. Each obstical is definately doable, it gets hard keeping it going hard between them and over them.

I used to give USAF special forces tests, the tests on paper don't look too hard till you realize they are in a timed sequence. Unless you train to keep the intensity up, you poop out way before the test is done. I had so many fail the final bits because they hadn't trained to do the whole test without resting more than a couple of minutes between exercises.

Every morning I take a Centrum multi-vitamin, 2 glucosamine/chondroitin (helps a LOT with my arthritis), and 2 arthritis strength Tylenols. Only other supplement type stuff I take is Powerbars and/or protein bars of some sort about twice a day. Working as much as I do and living by myself I don't have the opportunity to have many home cooked meals during the week. I take the Centrum to make sure I'm getting most of the vitamins I need. I'm ADD, been dealing with it my whole life, one of the reasons why I only did OK in school despite having a relatively high IQ. I seesaw between hyper active "GOGOGO!" and depression/lethargy where it feels like I'm mentally wading through molasses to get anything done. The vitamins help even things out and help me think clearer consistently, not as much as fresh foods with as little additives as I can manage do, but there is a noticeable difference. Working out and exercising helps a lot too, the endorphin releases from a good workout really bring up the low points and help to keep them at bay.

Thanks for starting this Thread. Now here's my story I'am 42 and at new years this year I tipped the scales at a all time high of 260. ten years ago I was 190 and 20 years ago I was 150. So the years of getting lazy have played there part along with quiting smoking in 2002 and never exercising in my life. The last straw was high blood pressure and some other medical issues. So in March this year I stepped into a gym ( i had never been in one before) and joined. They had a trainer show me how to use the machines(the right way)and she gave me a workout schedule. I go five days a week M-F 5-6am. I have not changed the way I eat yet. But my weight is down to 243-245 and feel alot better with myself. The best part is my medical issues are all doing alot better. My workout is 30 min of eliptcail or stair climber then 50 reps on two differnt ab machines each day. Then on day one I hit the upper body pushing machines(5 machines). Day two I hit the upper body pulling machines(4 machines). Day three is all leg machines(6 machines). I keep the weights low because I'am still learning but I have been able to raise them a little and I also started being able to do two sets of reps on each machine.I have my whole workout to 1 hr a day. I get mad that I still have a belly but it's going down slowly. On the bright side I'am still eating Steak and potatoes when I want. It has been neat reading everyones efforts to make a change and keep up the good work. I do think if I can get off my lazy ass and do it so can you. My goal is to try to get down to 230 by New Years.

I was trained/forced/fought/pushed at a high level. My coach was oldschool and was nicknamed "blood and guts" in his early days because the punishment he would take to win.

Thats great Nova. What reps/sets you doing on the other machines?

As others mentioned anger problems. I feel I get testy if I dont get to the gym.

Keep at it Nova, 15 pounds in 5 months sounds totally do-able even if you're taking it slow. Don't let the thought of a "diet" scare you away. I still eat burgers and junk food, I just eat them less often. Tweaking things more towards the leaner, less starchy side the majority of the time has had a noticeable impact on body fat loss.

I don't get testy when I skip a day or 2, I just get very antsy and have more nervous energy. When I took the 3 days off to let the legs recover that energy had dropped off though. It was kinda hard to get started again, but once I did it was like I hadn't skipped any days at all. Maybe that will change now that I'm able to push myself more and my body gets used to regular doses of endorphins at higher levels. We'll see.

As a diabetic heart patient (and old guy) I've learned a LOT about nutrition and I'll pass on the single most important tip I got for dietary stuff.

                                Cut out cheese!

My first cardiologist (turns out he's famous world-wide in this field) strongly suggested that I do that. As he explained, to make cheese you take away everything that isn't fat and send it off for animal feed. After a little research it turns out he's about right. Not sure about goat cheese and so on but I just no longer do cheese and so far (almost 10 years later) so good. It's really pretty easy as almost any dish can have the cheese deleted and I've found that it rarely makes much difference.

I also have cut out as much other fat as practical (grilled steak and burgers instead of fried, skinless chicken when possible, etc.) but the golden rule started with the cheese thing. Of course, with diabetes sugar is off the menu as much as practical and alcohol is no longer a possibility.

My addiction: Caffeine-free Diet Coke (get that Pepsi outta here!).
