Triggering a tangential, likely insignfigant thought . . . whatever happened to elegance in our society?

For example, when I was a kid, well-dressed women of all ages above childhood wore hosery with their dresses. In our inelegant present time, we're subjected to an endless parade of mostly awful bare legs and gnarled feet. While perhaps some supermodels can pull off that "bare" look, I'd estimate that about 95% of the general population (99.9% in my ancient age bracket) cannot.
