rather then grinding a hole in the paint- why not drill then tap? Put a bolt with a star washer to puncture the paint and call it good? Use stainless

      Re: mike343sharpstick's 69 Javelin project

Got it! I didn't have time to get to the parts store (stupid work :D). So when I got home I took a piece of steel strapping and drilled a hole in each end and connected these two bolts.

The battery was charged and the thing fired up. What a relief!

So as it was sitting there warming up, I couldn't resist a test drive so I put it on the ground and off I went on a maiden 5-speed voyage. This is going to be fun!

A few things I was worried about are no problem.
I did not get the flywheel balanced matched to the flex-plate that was on there, I knew it was a stock 343 part so I figured there was a good chance it was correct. I got a bit lucky with that, it runs as smooth as it did before.

Another observation is that the G-Force T5 is a little loud,in a good way. ;D

Now to put it back up and finish up all the little stuff and double check everything and tighten the shift ball. I also need to put the passenger seat back in yet and finish bolting in the driver seat. It would be a lot more enjoyable if it wasn't so freakin' cold out in the garage.

Took it out for more of a spin yesterday and a tank of fresh fuel. Based on the fuel cost the 5-speed was a damn good idea :o
At about 75 mph in 5th I'm at about 1,500 rpm, wow ;D. I know the stock tach is off some but wow what a Highway cruiser this thing is gonna be.
Now that I have the 5-speed in I can do some math to figure out the optimal rear gear that will go with the 401 I'm building. It's raining today so I won't be able to give it a good thrashing today again. ;)

It's hard to do a vid when your alone, however my daughter is old enough to take a short vid now :D
I've abused my tires more in these two short drives than I've done with the automatic all last summer ;D

Yep..your daughter should be the right one to make a vid..her mother should be glad you are such a responsible father ;D

Brought it to work today, it's a beautiful 32 degree morning in Wisconsin : :P.
I need to use the car to build a little confidence in its construction, or at least partial reconstruction. I basically put this entire car together myself and I'm not exactly the Ring brothers or Rad Rides by Troy. :D

It seems to take me a few runs to work and around town before I get comfy that I won't get stranded.
First I go around the block and check it all out. Then up to the gas station and back, check it out again. Then to work, and so on.
I still can't believe I took it to the first 3 stops of the '09 Power Tour right out of the box with no problems.

Anyone else worry about this? ???

I sure Orvill and Wilbur did it much the same way, Glenn Curtiss on the other hand, he went for it on the first try.

Congrats Mike, somewhere in between work, the gas station, and home, take a victory lap ;D

                            Comming Attractions!

Just got back from my road trip for the next project. The car was in southern Virginia and a buddy and I did a cannonball run to go get it. We Left Wisconsin on Thursday at noon and returned Sunday at about 3:00 PM!
Well, here it is. An X-IMSA RS Gremlin. I'll start a project thread when I actually start wrenching on it, but for now here is a tease.

The cost of fuel, OUCH! My 4.7 Durango was adequate as a tow vehicle, barely. I will not however haul a car through the Virginia/West Virginia mountains with it again, yikes!
When we were unloading the car from the trailer once we reached our final destination we noticed this.

                            Yikes again.
Made it home to tell the tale, in the fall sparks will fly!

Ummm.. My 12th grade shop teacher would have had a hay day with you! "That is not safe! And put your safety glasses on!"

Any way I really like that gremlin. Looks to have some potential.

Looks like you dodged (no pun intended) a bullet with that tire. It really would have sucked if it blew even from the standpoint of just changing it while the trailer was hitched.

We need more pictures of the X
