Dude, I'm not a big Chevy guy, but your car looks just right.
Wish I could have seen more of it on Drag Week last year.
This is the first car I ever bought on my own. I found it parked in a farmers field, in Parker Colorado when I was a senior in high school back in 1986. It was obvious that it had been used as a road side target by all of bullet holes it had in it. Windows? .... Yea they were MIA as well.
Over the course of the last three decades, she's seen a vast array of small blocks and different trans combos. The first of which was a junkyard 350/T10 combo that had the car running mid 14s w/a 100 shot of nitrous.
It's been everything from a dedicated bracket racer to a daily driver for my family. I was able to get three car seats in the back seat as our family has grown over the years.
Currently it's set up as a street/strip type warrior. We hit the Friday night club races, Saturday night cruises, and now my oldest son (Stewie on the forums) will be racing it at The High School Drags at Bandimere Speedway.
388 cubic inch SBC. Eagle forged rotating assembly w/ 6" rods, SRP forged pistons. Cam is a Reed solid lifter flat tappet grind. Dart supplied the Pro1 heads (box stock) with 2.02 intake and 1.6 exhaust valves. Up top is a Victor Jr intake w/a Proform 750 DP carb. The icing on the cake is a twin plate (stacked) nitrous system. First stage (so far) is a 175 shot that hit from the launch, and 2nd stage is a 125 shot (used in high gear).
Trans is a 700R4 built by Bobby Johnson of The Transmission Shop in Denver, CO using all TCI internal parts, as well as a 10" converter w/ 3800 stall. The trans has been tuned to automatically upshift @ 6200 rpm for consistency. It's controlled by a B&M Pro-ratchet shifter.
The rearend is a 12 bolt out of a '70 SS Chevelle. I still run the factory 3rd member with Richmond 4.56 gears, Superior axles, and a Summit diff cover.
Of course there has been failure along the way. I had built a budget 383 back in 2004. On the third pass ever on this motor, I hit it with a 150 shot. The last picture of the engines is the result .... JUNK!
The suspension has seen many variations over the years. In the 90's I had an itch for the whole pro-touring thing and added poly suspension bushings and big sway bars. That lasted a few years until I realized that bracket racing was a lot more fun.
Currently it has a 1" rear anti=roll bar that I fabbed up myself, with KYB shocks, and sadly I still run the factory drum brakes (hoping to fix that this summer). I added power steering over the past winter.
The current wheel and tire combo is Weld Draglites, 15X8 rear and 15X5 front w/275 60 15 street radials and 205 70 15s up front. For the summer months, I run Hoosier Quick Time Pros, 28X11.50X15 on the rear.
Of course over the decades, I've had Rally wheels and Centerlines as well.
The very first paint job was apparently a laquer job that the farmer put on it before he parked it out in the field. Somewhere around 1991, my friend Jason and I set out to do a cheap DIY paint job at my house. We got rid of the SS stripes and went all white using a single stage enamel. It turned out OK ....
Around 2000 when I started the Race-A-Cop program for The Denver Police Dept, we Jason and I repainted it again. This time though, Jason had been working at Crest Autobody for several years and knew what he was doing. We rolled it in on a Friday afternoon, and by Monday morning we rolled it out of the oven in a new coat of Ford Police Car White in a clear/base .... THANKS RON!!!! This is the paint it still wears today.
I'm hoping to update the paint again in the near future, but the sad part is that it will ned to be entirely stripped this time. I'm leaning towards a color this time somewhere along the lines of the new Camaro orange ....
Nothing real fancy here, just a repro kit from Chevelle Classics done sometime in the mid 90's.
In 2001 I did add a 6 point rollbar with the help of Bobby Johnson @ The transmission Shop.
So far to date, the best ET/MPH is a 10.96@124 on a single 175 shot, thru the mufflers.
Naturally aspirated it runs super consistent 12.30s@106ish. Keep in mind that this is with a density altitude around 9000'.
Not bad performance considering I started with a 16 second high school car!
