    My Nissan

Buddy got it for me in from Japan in '03. Inline 6 diesel, 4x4, five speed, centerline autodrag wheels, 10.50x31's, PTO winch...
Does about 800 clicks on a tank. 1991 Nissan Safari Gran Road Hi-Top. Keep it in a sea container in Wiri just outside of Manukau.

Yup, and I haven't paid the Maori dudes that run the storage yard in over two-years, so I'm a little worried, but they are kind of like drinking buddies so I don't think they will MF me. I probably owe them a couple grand.

I don't know if it is the same engine as the Scout. I think it is a 4.2L. The chassis is a Y-60. It has been a really good rig. I've put about 75k clicks on it, and in NZ you are supposed to pay a hefty road use tax on miles with a diesel, and get a sticker. The fine is like ten times the fee in penalties and I ran it for 25K clicks without ever buying the road time. Luckily I never got caught, though I did pay up on my last rego, but not the penalties. Last year I got stuffed driving though a police check point (they are all over) with no rego or Warrant Of Fitness. I was looking to make a run for it and the cops were not amused. Anyway, they said if I can get the paperwork done and come back to the checkpoint before they left they would tear up the ticket. Found some cool South African ExPats and they wrote up the papers for me, but the cops had moved out. Went to the Police station at Orewa and the sweet Maori gal working the desk there just let me off.

Here is another one of it taken in 2003 at Auckland harbor, back when my kids were little. I really like that Nissan; it has been just bulletproof.

Steve, do you take a sail boat over to NZ or have you rigged up a stroked 318 powered rocket pack?

Push between Dulcich and BKB at the moment. That's cool you've gotten to spend time over seas, particularly in scenic places.

You might think this is weird, but I was seriously considering buying a diesel powered boat and making the cruise, mapped it all out hugging coastline most of the way and dropping down via Japan and Indonesia, and making it a live-aboard for when I'm down there. Even though it is probably better, I don't have the confidence in my sailing ability for such a long haul - I'd rather put my faith (fate) in internal combustion,

When I jumped into farming, it pretty much put a crimp on those plans. For now, anyway. I do know a guy who left Marinal Del Ray in a sailboat, and landed in NZ and settled there. I worked on his boat back when I lived there in the early '90's, doing the bottom paint and stuff before he sold it.

Steve, you've been posting a lot lately. And I thought my week end jaunts to my place in PA were a big adventure. Ditto what Brian said! Your trips to NZ are going to be remembered by your kids as special times. It's nice you're able to do this for them. Good dad!
