How much HP needed to hit 200 MPH?

I'm setting up an 85 Camaro to run El Mirage and Bonneville in 2013. With minimal air dams and aerodynamics what is the estimated HP needed to achieve 200 MPH? I'm running a 468 or 496 BBC with a 2.73 rear gear and a 5 speed trans.

I am sure someone here knows, but here is the landspeed racers forum..some calculators, some chit chat

85 camaro is quite light..2.73 and on overdrive. the hp question is probably not even necessary being that large an engine.

some cars it take 800+ some can do it with 600hp some cant do it with 1000 hp.With the car you have if you look at all the small details and get 700-800 hp. you should have enough Dont use the overdrive.
      just my 2 cents worth.
      good luck

All you want to do is run 200mph? You're going to put thousands in safety gear in this project just to run 2 bills? I understand what you're asking but I'm thinking you might not know all the issues required to get into the Bonneville 200 mph Club or the Dirty 2 at El Mirage. If that's your goal then things will be much different. But to answer your question.....

Bonneville will take you ~ 550-600 hp in that car
El Mirage will take a bit more ~ 700-750 hp.

        Have fun with your project.

I'm building a '91 for the wife for the Ohio Mile. and my calculations are spot on with Dynoroom 500-600. My wifes personal goal is 2 bills as well but that don't mean we gona stop there. She the type the more she gets the more she wants.

Captthundarr, I hope you are talkin about going 200 mph at Bonneville cause it will take alot more than that to go 200 mph at Ohio. Probably 800 + in your car.

I think maybe Mike is trying to say that you have to build to the safety level required for the record holder in that class... might as well plan on MORE. I wouldn't pay attention to him though, he's only done it already.

Standing mile speaking and camaro speaking. Assuming you have your junk together, well tuned, with the suspension, 500hp will yeild in the high 170's, 600hp will yeild right at 190. From there the aero and downforce has so much to do with it. Not to sound arrogant but 190mph is reeaaaallly easy to do, I think most of us will attest to that. That extra 10mph could be 100 hp, or it could be 300hp. I my case 800hp will run 200mph every time out. Engine combos play into this too. Dyno queen HP doesn't count. If you're not making flat hp with tq within 100lb of hp, you're not going to do it in a mile. Think power mesa, not power everest... You don't have to build a rocket ship to go 200mph, but it should still feel like you're taking off in one when you shift into 4th, or you're not going to run the big number. Hope that helps.

Aero is a really big deal. We went 200 with a really slippery Firebird with less than 600 rwhp (chassis dyno) and we did it with aero.
HP and weight - that's the story.

You've got some great insight here. Let us know where you plan to race. I see under your avatar that you live in SoCal so I assumed you were looking at El Mirage or Bonneville. It could be other tracks too, Mojove, Texas, Loring, or the new track in Ohio. Anyway choose your vinue and have fun!

                        Hello Mike,
700R4. The GeezerII has a TH350. It actually won Real Street at the HRTSC in 2009. We're working to get the new car on the chassis dyno in the next couple of weeks. Are you going to be ready for April in Ohio?

and the 550-600hp is exactly right... at bville.... I don't know how much HP you have to bring to the dance at El Mirage to run 200mph in a Camaro..... More then I have seems to be a right answer though..... ( in a Modified sports car you need 748hp )
