62 Falcon - $5k challenge, how will it rise from the ranger's ashes?

Greg - I don't want a lift that limits access to the underside of the car - like the scissor or "mid rise" set ups - even if I'm limited to rolling under it on the rolling mechanics chair - I'd rather have that than a scissor type. Which brands do you have?
My 2 post is a Whip - made in Ft.Worth TX.

Bob - I think you asked Greg - but I have to say my Whip has given me not a single problem in almost 10 years, all sorts of vehicles, I put it up - which means it was probably done wrong, and it still works fine, I haven't even changed the fluid or made a single adjustment, ever.

From what I've seen at work, where we have 2 post, 2 column in ground hydraulic, and drive on, they all have their place.

if you don't need access to the center of the underbody - and you have limited ceiling height - the scissor lifts sure beat the heck out of a floor jack.

If you need to pull transmissions, axles, do exhaust work, chassis fabrication, etc - you got to have a clear floor 2 post - symmetric or not - up to you.

If you want the least hassle way to get a car up in the air to inspect under neath - a four post is hard to beat... and they're just fine for exhaust and chassis work, and dropping transmissions too.

Hey John, that new shop looks bitchin'! Score on the stuff they left! I'm hoping the guy will leave an old garage sign and cabinet in the shop of the place we're trying to get. He already sold the compressor to the neighbor though so who knows...no blast cabinet so I'll have to get one of those too. Do you guys (John, Randal) use the blast cabinet as much as I imagine I would use it? It seems to me like that would be a good investment.

I have the current height limitation for my 4 post and I've done pretty much everything (exhaust, small chassis stuff, brakes, rear end) from a rolling stool. Transmission r/r requires us to be a bit hunched over but used a trans jack. Not too bad but need a shorter trans jack.

I pulled the engine with it on the lift too. It made it easier to get under and disconnect everything and then I just lowered it to within an inch of setting on the legs of the cherry picker.

I don't have a running air compressor or a blast cabinet :*( I wish I had a cabinet and the motivation to fix up the compressor.

Bob all my lifts have different uses to me,but if I only had one lift it would be the two post even though my four post has air jacks and I can do everything on it as I can do on my two post it does take up alot of room. It also cost about three times as much as a two post each jack cost almost as much as the lift itself. With ceiling clearence at home the low rise is great for alot of things too I don't think I would want to do without any of them.

I have no ceiling height problem. I've got several out buildings and I'm eyeing the one with a bunch of ceiling height.

I'd like to get one that will allow me to work on the dually, but that's some bucks.

Bob I have a friend that has alot of different vechicals from Vipers to Dodge Dully super cab trucks and I installed a 12,000lb four post with air jacks and it fits everything he has with no problem and it is safer for the trucks and the people around them. The lifts are not to bad the air jacks are pricey,but you can buy the lift and use bottle jacks on a platform that is made to fit where the air jacks would fit and you can still do everything you need to do. The other good thing about a four post is you have a work bench with the runners.

Bob - I've lifted my F350 crewcab long box SRW truck on my 10k two post assymetric.

I don't like it - but it does work.

I do believe a drive on four post is the best for a truck - there are long / wide versions of four posts available.
Most four posts now are available as "mobile" units so you can literally jack them up onto wheels and roll them around as space constraints allow - that's a cool feature that's only available in the lightest duty of two posts.

Maybe we should start another garage equipment / hoist thread...
