This is more than likely a stupid question, BUT......

What about running the house off the barn?

Theoretically it shouldn't matter BUT in theory bumblebees and helicopters cannot fly either.

Just throwing it out there, not knowing the layout and all.

I may look into that Stiney - I'm thankful that the power comes in underground - no ice breakage or tree branch vulnerability that way - but - it sure makes it harder to change anything.

I'm guessing that the original owners (same family since it was built in '80) had the barn built probably in the 90's.
At that point copper wasn't that expensive - but - for some reason, they put a separate gas and electric meter on the barn instead of running it off the house.

The really weird thing is they went to all the trouble of finishing the upstairs of the barn, to the point of insulation drywall, sky lights, ceiling fans and carpet, with it's own lockable steel door to the stairway... but there is no running water in the building! Not even a frost free hose bib to wash cars out front.... hopefully it won't be extremely painful to remedy that situation.

I ran aluminum wire in PVC from a service feed on a pole - underground both to house and barn, 100 amps each. Service disconnect on pole is 200 amp, plus I can feed them with a generator from the pole if I want.

The wire ran me roughly $300, trencher rent $100, forget what the PVC cost. Plus I dropped a water line and other cabling in the trench while it was open, now I have a new hydrant at the barn.

Of course I had no asphalt to screw up. Dig a hole on each side and jackhammer a pipe underneath maybe?

Been there done that at the current shop, but it was all across grass.

Bottom line is -this won't be a priority for a while. Here's the only shot I have handy of the new shop.

This is the side that faces the road.

I'm hoping I have sufficient set back to the Left side to put a lean to wide enough to get the truck and trailer into.
The right side is two 16x9 overhead doors.

Shop area complete with garbage left by sellers.

Cool old vice and heavy table, storage cabinet with cool top an old light duty grinder, and - the upstairs, two basically identical rooms. I'm thinking back room will be storage and wood shop area, perhaps with a door in the floor and a hoist over head for lifting stuff up stairs? Other side will be a good spot for my drumset, Lee's drumset and other devices of tomfoolery. Who's got an old pinball machine that looks cool works great but they just don't have the room for it anymore?

Looks like a really nice shop as for a lift they do make a low ceiling lift it only takes 9' of height. you can go to bendpaclifts.com and check them out thats where I buy my lifts from theres no taxes and they deliver for free.

Really nice shop, and the man cave above is a bonus, even if it restricts ceiling height! Maybe you can add on one end high enough to be a lift area, for work that requires a lift?

                              Thanks guys.

I do want to add on with another building that has capacity for my current 2 post lift - which requires 12ft ceilings. For working on the underside of a car, you really can't beat a clear floor 2 post design - lots of room to get transmissions, exhaust, axles, etc, in and out.

However - as we are in no position to be building another structure any time soon, I'm considering something like this 4 post to use in the new shop for some years until the addition can become reality - this will always be handy to double parking storage - and for lifting the truck - which is a chore on the two post since it's so long and the frame height difference front to rear is enormous. Greg - is this the place you were talking about?

Yes John that lifts up from the middle of the car or truck and is easier to pick up bigger vechicals. If you decide to go with a four post you will need air jacks to get the wheels off I have both in my shop and they both have there uses. Good Luck.
