    Build strategy

Not poll worthy - but I need input sorting out how to most efficiently progress from here on the falcon.

We're looking at moving in the coming month or two, and we all know what that does to any shop time.

There were a few things done during the thrash to try to make DW12 that will have to be un-done to move forward... but not many.

What I want to avoid are any other "one step forward, two steps back" sort of moves.

Given time restraints and the car as it sits now, I think having it in paint by DW13 is entirely out of the question, and is not really a priority.

Here's my feeble attempt at a plan trying to minimize re-work.... thoughts?

    Body/paint:
    1. repair window channel rust, fix dents in roof, prep interior painted surfaces.
    2. paint roof, pillars, dash, interior metal surfaces white.
    3. install glass and trim
    4. install interior

    Wiring:
    1. remove start on wiring in engine compartment
    2. paint engine compartment, chassis, trunk
    3. resume wiring - loom runs, tie downs, trunk battery mount etc. once and for all.

    chassis / plumbing:
    1. install factory replacement fuel tank with drain plug, factory sending unit 3/8" feed - drain plug will become EFI return line port when the time comes - plan to leave factory vent alone (unless instructed otherwise)
    2. run 3/8" steel hard lines for fuel from factory location up outside of sub frame rails, through wheel well and into engine compartment on driver side - allow for future rail mounted electric pump be it for carb or efi
    3. run brake lines

    Power train:
    1. complete install of cal tracs, heim joints, u bolts, crown vic disc brakes - look into e-brake set ups (LS electric?)
    2. confirm driveshaft length - have shaft modified / balanced as required
    3. driveshaft loop fab and install
    4. install engine, trans, shifter, tv cable, radiator, fan, shroud, etc.

    And most importantly:
Drive in primer as much as possible to work bugs out before DW13!

    UNKNOWNS:
    Hoop? Cage?
    Belts?
    Tach and AFR gauge location?
    Headliner?
    Cut-outs?

Fuel filler in factory position or inside trunk with funnel / drain to outside?

Fill in factory reverse light holes in tail panel?
(run 63 fairlane talights with reverse lights in center)

Swap 4.10 gears for lower numerical given 2.8 first gear in AOD?
There's always something new to learn.

I was hoping you'd hurry up and finish the Falcon John! I am getting inspired by the build! I've got a neighbor who owns a '63 Falcon that just came out of a barn after 23 years! He's lost his storage and is wanting to sell it. I think it might be my next project after I sell the '71 Camaro! I see a Falcon gasser with a straight axle in my future!

Me inspire you? You're the one with the magazine car! LOL

Lots of falcons have been gaserized - so you have a lot of examples to follow - since mine had holes in some places - but not in the quarters - I elected to leave the radiused wheel wells to someone else.

I can't recommend highly enough loosing the shock towers! Look at the welder's series kits. I know it's not a straight axle - but for $275 you can get a weld your own M2 cross member - with that you can mount it where-ever you want! you can get the nose high stance and still have front discs, rack and pinion, etc.... I know it's not true vintage style - but something to think about.

We made our own shock tower block off plates - pretty easy - but they're available from several places at not too hateful prices if you want to go that route. Crites has some interesting parts for these as well.

Here would be my minimum recipe for you:
                  1. rear leaf spring relocation
                  2. mini tub
                  3. frame connectors including reinforcement to rocker hem flange and extra triangulation up front - these cars have no factory torque box
                  4. Loose shock towers and go with the front end of your choice.

                  ENJOY!

A few calls are out to local chassis/cage shops - it sure seems like an 8 point is the minimum that make sense.... time will tell.

5 or 10. Five will get you a NHRA legal bar down to 10.0 , 10 is a cage. I'm pretty sure a removable side bar is legal on the 5. Passenger door bar is not required. For a street car, the 5 makes sense to me.

I'm thinking about a roll over, if there's nothing supporting the A pillar - just the hoop behind the front seats - that roof is coming in on me.... if I'm going to do it.... I might as well do it right? right?

I think that it really depends on what your plan is for the Falcon's use. There are thousands of early Falcons running around with no rollbar or rollcage. Anything you add will take it to the next level for the street, but for the strip I'd go for something really sound. Even if it's just occasionally run on the strip, I'd still put something in for a cage that will be substantial.

Austin - we think alike - I've never had a caged car before - but I've never been a Dad before, or thought about safety much beyond a helmet and a scattershield around the clutch.

I've seen the super high dollar custom made "pro touring" cages that are nearly undetectable when walking up to the car - but I know that those are way way way way out of my price range.

I'm hoping I can find a local shop that is willing to bend up the hoops to be a pretty tight fit - tack things in place and let me weld the rest to save money. Or - the Alston kit will get the nod, what I'm unsure about with that is how much shipping will be - as those come truck freight.

I'd figure 150-200 in freight... it ain't pretty.

Well - one very good reputation local shop got back with me at around $4 grand for a 4130 tigged full cage

So - I'm going to be doing something myself. I wonder if I can get away with a bit less frieght if I pick it up at a depot instead of drop ship to the house?

These guys are not far from where I grew up - so I could pick up from them on a weekend visit:
