Where Craftsman tools are actually made now? I don't know. I pulled two "identical", same size, Gates Green Stripe belts off my car last weekend, the older one says made in USA, the newer doesn't. The newer one is thinner by about .020, does anybody know about this running change? I bought the presumably offshore belt at O'Rielly's near Heartland Park Topeka after the other belt self immolated during Drag Week day one.

As a nation we have appearantly voted for cheap over quality and the presumption that USA made equals same. The Wal-Martization of American consumer retail.

I am glad I have an American made crank (Bryant) and rods (Oliver) in the motor again, cost was approximatly 3x vs. the Scat pieces.

The new ratchets have a very high infant mortality rate. I've had about 33 percent that are crap right out of the box. Quality control is an absolute joke. I've had an extremely bad run with the 1/4" ratchets, like 2/3 fail. The 1/2 are a little better. I don't use the newer 3/8 ones, as I prefer my old crap so I can't really speak to them.

This is their "big box" line though, the 8,000,001 piece kit ratchets, and it's hit and miss. Some of them are great, some are crap. When you get the off the shelf replacement for the coarse tooth ratchets, the ratio gets worse (to me anyway). The replacement is worse than the original. Some of the off the rack fine tooth ratchets are still magical.

The sockets I've broken over the years all have some evidence of having been on an impact. Sears will still replace a chrome socket that's been on an impact wrench. The Snap-On guy would hand it back to you and go "Bummer"... the Mac guy would give us dirty looks and then replace it. He also brought us ice cold beer on Fridays. Guess where I spent more money.

(Sears... cheaper to buy my own beer.)

(The last paragraph's completing sentence did not end as an interoggative for a reason.)

To be clear - Groucho the dog, not Groucho, the spellchecking, grammer police, angry Californian.

It fiigures that I would misspeel it. Karma is a bitch.

Oh - just spotted it. If it helps any, that would be grammar with two A's, and no E.

The really good part is, I get to catch up on missed sleep due to insomnia. After decoding some of this shit, I'm tired as hell.

So - I suppose after 10 pages, the moral of the story is - if you want good tools for not a lot of money - buy used!

                        other lessons learned:

-don't use bad grammar or speeling - it pisses off Groucho and a bunch of other guys, but it helps Groucho sleep - so maybe it's not a totally bad thing?

Groucho - we ALL need a decoder box to figure out what Mr Subaru from Maine types!
There's always something new to learn.

I still say buy tools that have a lifetime warranty and are easily replaced.... if you aren't breaking tools (no matter the brand) you're obviously not working hard enough

no such thing in my neck of the woods (okay, I exaggerate - there is one within 50 miles of my house).

there are damn few people left at Sears who know what impact damage looks like when they see it. Ya gave me a retirement idea though. I wonder what Sears' benefits are like?

SJ! Is that you? where ya been?

I saw a bumper sticker that needed a decoder - grate rider, bad spalr

I offer Barry conversion for a small fee. I don't need the decoder...

This thread is now appealing to my a.d.d. , I feel like a pinball.
