Besides, I just admitted I do it. And I will stick by my belief, that no matter how old you are, you know better than to drive that way under those circumstances, even more so nowadays with all the requirements and instructions required before kids get their license.

And NO! I never drove that way in populated residential areas when I was a kid .... and I still don't/won't do it today.
must be nice to live, grow up in hickville,, and in the boonies.
sorry east coast is crowded, and you still can wreck on a boonies road and hurt someone so thats weak arguement anyways

      One more thought.

Driver licenses are given out through the state not the school, I am thinking that a punishment for driving recklessly on city streets should not be something the school is obliged to monitor. The cop in this case being a person at the school should make no difference, if you are wearing your cop hat do the cop job, if you are wearing the school guy cap do the school guy job. Sending these kids the message that a punishment for misbehaving will be as lenient as possible and handled through their school is not a good way to set them up for the real world.

Jeez Mark......... either take your meds, or move to hickville, or something man!

Lately you've been more of a sourpus than usual. I know life is giving you some kicks in the nuts, but you've got to kick it right back!
Of all the paths you take in life - make sure a few of them are dirt.

Hickville?... Boonies?....Really?......I WISH!.... We wouldn't be having this discussion if that was the case.

And I agree, GOD help my kids if they ever drive that way, and they better get the dam ticket from Mr. touchy feely cop. I'll complain to I/A if they don't ....

I just pray that you never have to deal with a child being hit and killed by someone "just being a kid", that never got a ticket because the cop didn't want the kid's insurance rates to go up BS....

my point, kinda lost on you.. is if every male got a ticket for all the stupid crap we did in a car at that age, we'd all have been walking, and lic revoked.. nothings changed.. they are no different than the kids of the "good ole days"
cops , haven't either sometimes you luck out with a WARNING(GAIL) and sometimes they make it hurt.. ticket + 6 years of surcharges.. sometimes they make it hurt but not follow them for 6 years.. as seen as you have no idea what the cop is going to do.. and if that high schools like most you need a parking sticker. he just might have pulled those two's stickers.. no car you're on the bus.. and unlike some, that want the book thrown at them.. that, back to the school bus will hurt and be a bigger reminder than any ticket that cop could've written..
            but that be thinking..

I don't have a lot to contribute, other than this - It's a medically/clinically proven fact that the human brain, particularly the male human brain, is not fully developed until somewhere around the age of 30. The biggest gap in the meantime is the failure to recognize the difference between a risk and a thrill. Particularly when the thrill risks OTHERS.

Messed-up adults go to jail for it, so how about the kids that do it? You bust one of them up the river for it, it just barely might send a message to the rest. Maybe. Barely maybe, because the brain-gap still exists. The problem is that the REAL message is never sent, so the errant practice continues.

                      Right,
Drive through my neighborhood like that and we will take your ass out. Like the cop should have done. A citizen called, the cop should have done his job. I think he could have let them off with a warning or not, his decision, but to involve the school is inappropriate and probably not condoned by his cop or school bosses.

What if the same two idiots a year from now are racing again and somone gets killed, will it be brought up in court that Mr. cop who also works at the school chose to handle it this way using the school as the punishment vehicle? Will the school have to share the responsiblity for the diecision this guy made a year prior? what would that lawsuit look like?
He was dealing with a citizen complaint off of school property, not on school time with his police uniform on. He should not have the choice to handle this through the school! What he did could be construed as a conflict of interest and I don't believe the citizen was being properly served here.

I think some of us have forgotten what it was like to be a Teenager.........You know bloody well right you did the same stupid shit as a kid as they were doing, but now that you are older and know the consequence of your actions, you think that these kids should have the strong arm of the law brought down upon them and for them to be raked over the coals of hell for having what in their minds was a little fun....... Sure we can speculate that someone "could" have gotten hurt, but no one did, so no harm no foul.........The Officer is doing the right thing, I'm sure the school will notify the Parents, the officer will have a thorough talking with the kids and they might even make them examples at the school on how not to drive on public streets......And the apology letters will show them how to show accountability for their actions and how their actions affect others.........I think this is a way better approach than having them get a couple of tickets and pay a fine, where's the lesson in that?? All that does is penalize the parents, who might not give a crap in the first place...........

I'm not saying throw the book at them, if he wanted to let them off with a warning fine, just keep your police job and school job separate.

                                Wow....

Street racing in a neighborhood, with peds present/school letting out, is now just "stupid crap we all did as a kid"?

Sorry guys ... not me.....maybe out on the highways and such (looking back, even that was stupid) but never in neighborhoods, you can say all you want that I did, I know better.

In colorado, we require these kids to sit thru 30 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours drive time with an instructor and 80 hours behind the wheel with a parent/responsible party. Part of the required material that is covered deals with careless vs reckless vs accidental. For anyone to say that kind of behavior is acceptable because of their age is utterly stupid! Just by getting the license, they know better .... the material was presented at some point.

The argument about punishing the parents .... I have to raise the BS flag. Like I said, if my kid does it, easy enough, he doesn't drive anymore .... period! My insurance will actually go down cause I'll take him off of it .... oh yea, that car he drives is in my name, not his, so no, he won't be driving it.

I thank God every day that he shows the responsibility to drive, no i'm not that naive to think he doesn't act different when I'm not around, but I'm pretty confident he won't "just be doing what kids do" and seriously hurt someone or worse ....
Whiskey for my men ... and beer for their horses!
