    Stump Pulling... Brutus?

I'm pretty proud of Brian scoring his new Chevy tow truck, and have been following the threads on the subject religiously. Now one thing that keeps coming up is his talking about pulling a stump with this rig. I know it has a combined 30,000 lbs of winch on that twin boom outfit, but if we are talking a man-sized stump here, I say no way. Aint gonna happen. A serious tree stump is way more that Brutus will ever be able to take on. Maybe set your sights on a sappling, Bry; you are going to really disappoint the boys if you keep talking about pulling stumps with that rig.

Well, there is no questioning that Brutus is one tough rig, but I don't think that it is any match for a serious tree stump. I think Bry is in for a real wake-up call if he actually tries to pull this off with a regular tow truck. No way, no how.

It will be totally entertaining watching him try.

I've gotta ask; Brian, do you want that reality sandwich on rye? I'm sure that Brutus can drag cars by the ass all day long, but I have to warn Brian that it isn't going to be a match for a tree stump. Bry, you might want to dig it out and saw through the tap root first if you really want try hooking it.

Steve, you may be right, but I am going to give it hell anyway. It is a willow tree stump and those babies are notoriously shallow rooted. It is probably 28" across.

I'll take the reality sandwich on a toasted everything bagel, please.

Wait 'till you see me lowering and raising engines out of my basement with it. That'll bring a tear to your eye!

If you chain it to another tree, my money is on Brutus pulling it out. Otherwise, I see it winching the big brute across the ground.

it will be entertaining to watch, but I think dulcich is right - you'll be pulling the truck into wheelies. If you anchor it down, it'll look like that monster truck pull-off you blogged about last week

The stump does have friction and traction on its side. Those overgrown weeds can be quite the match, even for construction equipment.....

With that said, good luck Brian! Give it heck!

Chain Brutus to Goliath and then rip the stump out of the ground. Take pictures so everyone can be jealous.

Forget stump pulling. We need to see a Brutus vs. Goliath pull off. 292 vs 292. Like the blog post video where the one monster truck gets its rear axle pulled off and flips over.

I volunteer to drive the other one!

In my limited experience with this type of thing - I've found that impact loading is your friend when fighting anything with roots into the ground. It's hell on equipment and can be dangerous - but inertia and momentum are your friends when you want a stump anywhere other than where mother nature put it. Heavy truck, heavy logging chain, get a running start - WHAM when the chain gets tight. It can be a real wake up call to your forehead agains the steering wheel / wind shield. Wear your freaking seat belt! Pray the thing doesn't come rocketing toward the tail gate / back window faster than you can accelerate....

Winches pull slowly - great for pulling a car out of the mud, or up out of a ditch - great for moving engines in and out of basements, great for lifting stuff of all kinds.... for pulling a stump? We shall see. Regardless - it's going to be fun to watch!
There's always something new to learn.
