I'm still part of the dying breed who think a pickup is for hauling things..... I built a couple V8 s-10 pickups, and, while donuts were a mere blip of the throttle away, I got a bit tired of swapping ends every time it rained (so I built a V8 4x4 s-10 pickup - then I could drift at any moment in time).... all of which got me into s-10 blazers.... hmmm, I may have just talked myself into building another one.... damn you Bob and your innocent suggestions

hauling things? with an S-10? I've had a long bed full size pickup (with a swapped in big block) for decades....it hauls things, and it's not so tricky to drive. It will try to swap ends when it's wet out, but I'm pretty well used to that by now.My fabulous web page

when it comes to hauling / towing - I really prefer overkill - so I have a one ton long box crew cab, the 172" wheel base is a pain to maneuver in some parking lots - but it sure makes for great stability and ride out on the road, no matter how much is in the bed, or hooked to the hitch. There's always something new to learn.Comment

We have Big Red, the 1 ton diesel crew cab dually.
If he gave up on the RFH, I was thinking about turning it into a LSR Modified Mini-pickup. I had talked my Dad and brother into it, but Dad didn't like the idea that it probably wouldn't top out at over 200mph. Its a real problem that Pops has ran some very high speeds at NASCAR big tracks when he was doing the Richard Petty Driving experience. I know he did better than 160mph at Vegas, and probably a few decades more than that at Talledega and Daytona. He is spoiled for speed.I'm still learningComment

My Studebaker pickup. When I got it, it had a C-10 pickup frame under it but it was too wide. I went to a 4x4 from a full size truck, then finally a 2wd S-10 frame.Originally posted by squirrel View Posthauling things? with an S-10? I give you that background to say this. The S-10 truck is far closer in wheelbase, frame thickness, and components to your 57 trucks than it is to a full size truck. So yes, I've hauled all sorts of stuff with them... even now, my dad's 56 truck, his biggest problem swapping in the rear differential from an 80s truck is the width.... it's 2" wider than what the 56 has in it.
So squirrel, I'm not sure I get your point(s)....Doing it all wrong since 1966Comment

I think the point is that a s10 short bed is dinky, and a short wheel base s10 regular cab can be quite interesting with a V8 at power. I'm not gonna say an S10 is a girl truck, but who bought your Stude?Originally posted by SuperBuickGuy View PostMy Studebaker pickup. take it with the good natured jab that I intended it to be. I've had a couple of S10's, and they were great (city rigs). Tying all this back into Bob's thread, I'd rather use a one ton dually to haul the 84" wide bed low boy.
Bob, was the Cat for the Furd or the RFH?Last edited by Beagle; September 29, 2013, 06:52 AM.Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.Comment

I don't know how you're gonna fit a load of wallboard into a Ranger or an S-10, but I guess some folks don't need to haul much. The beds on my old trucks are the same size as the beds on new long/wide bed trucks.
My wife gets by with her short bed full size truck, but she makes a lot of trips to the feed store, can't fit a lot of bales in it.My fabulous web page

so, yeah...Hey Bob...any progress? If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark DonohueComment

This weekend my son pulled the door panels off so that I can get the windows up. Then it went back under the car cover.
Big Red stole my weekend by breaking the acclerator cable, and we spent a bunch of time rewiring the start button and wired in a button to trip the solenoid for the glow plugs.
My disgust with the new, but leaking, heater core has not abated. Or, I'm just not ready yet to tear back into the dash.
Don't worry, I'll get back to it.

This car has been sold on to my son. He has it ready to go to the smog shop on Saturday. I expect that they won't like the CAT that is installed on the exhaust, given that it was purchased prior to recent changes in the requirements from CARB, and we'll have to install a different one.
I'll get some pictures before it's gone for good.I'm still learningComment

Fail on the smog. It started acting funny before we got it there. Backfiring on start up, almost like the cam belt had slipped a tooth. We'll work on it tomorrow.I'm still learningComment

It had been running fine. We're a bit disturbed at the sudden onset. However, I didn't get a chance to look at it as Jason needed to go to work.
We plan to change to a smaller turbo in order to give it some street car grunt. So we'll get this fixed first.I'm still learningComment
